Foreign Exchange Investigator

San Francisco, California, United States

Dec 1980 - Nov 1995

Management Trainee

Santa Barbara, California, United States

I started out as a bank clerk at SPNB's Santa Barbara headquarters on State Street. In order to qualify for the management trainee program, I had to transfer up to their headquarters at One Embarcadero Center in San Francisco. At that time the city had been going through a monumental transformation: passed one of strongest gay rights bills in the country; avant garde politically engaged punk scene came of age; voted propositions that would become harbingers of pro-business but socially tolerant politics that help define today's city.

Mar 1978 - Nov 1980

Resident Manager

San Luis Obispo County, California, United States

I took over the managerial reigns from my respected colleague, David Dancer, who also preceded me as manager of San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito back in the mid-60s. A modern ranch style restaurant perched on a hilltop overlooking a beautifully lush valley near the college town of San Luis Obispo. Dan Dorn, former Cal Poly student, along with his future bride Nancy, had recently acquired & developed this property as the first in a chain of restaurants planned for the future. They had previously purchased the long time family-runned Original Breakers Cafe in the nearby sleepy little seaside fishing village of Morro Bay from her father, Harry Amsel. A former New York attorney who back in 1942 had passionately developed this very popular seafood establishment along the charming waterfront.

Jul 1973 - Aug 1976

Resident Manager

Montecito, California, United States

During this period this historically popular small resort was mired in serious litigation, but fortunately placed in receivership under court-appointed formidable guidance of retired State Senator Alvin C.Weingand. Along with famed British actor Ronald Coleman, he owned & operated this exclusive Hollywood hideaway for over 30 yrs. Through his expert leadership, along with our devoted small staff, we were able to successfully revive & maintain struggling business for 5 years until it was eventually auctioned off to reliable new hotel owner. After over 50yrs of various turnovers, this beautiful little resort & spa is once again thriving under ownership of Beanie Babies multi-billionaire entrepreneur Ty Warner. Travel + Leisure rated it 2022's #1Hotel in California. Also, Forbes & Conde Nast Traveler have previously given it top honors. Throughout time I was living & working at ranch, in late 60s & early 70s, there were many pleasurable moments I was fortunate enough to experience, i.e. early morning hikes or horseback rides at sunrise before work, along many trails up in canyon of resort's 500 acre lush property overlooking sparkling blue Pacific & Channel Islands; living in one of it's quaint little cottages with wood burning Franklin stove; playing tennis with some of the guests; being lifeguard & bartender up at swimming pool or at our private cabana down on nearby Miramar Beach; savoring delicious meals either in dining room or through room service; enjoying live music trio entertainment in Plowing & Angel Lounge; getting good workout helping our groundskeeper, Chico, maintain beautiful gardens or chopping wood for fireplaces of various guest cottages; being a privileged member of the California Hotel & Motel Association. A very special moment I will always cherish was when ranch graciously hosted beautiful garden wedding reception for me and my lovely bride, Nancy Jo, following our exchange of marriage vows at nearby Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

🦺Beach Lifeguard

California State Parks And Recreation

Carpinteria, California, United States

During this time, Santa Barbara, Ventura & northern LA County regional headquarters was based in the beach community of Carpinteria. Responsible for overseeing several state beaches & parks throughout this area. It's jurisdiction extended from remote Refugio Beach in the north down to Leo Carrillo Beach in the south near Malibu. Sporting traditional red trunks & khaki jackets while proudly displaying gold California State Park patch with iconic brown bear, we diligently went about our extraordinary daily tasks as guardians of thousands of beachgoers who flocked to these various beaches throughout the summer. We may not have had quite the glamorous lifestyle as later portrayed in Hollywood's popular TV series 'Baywatch', but we certainly had our share of rewarding fun & excitement, as well as getting paid a fair salary. Other than always being very alert & keeping sunbathers safe, which was very paramount to us guards, our daily routines were fairly mundane, usually picking up litter around our stations, providing helpful answers to inquisitive minds, administering minor first aid, correcting bad behavior, handling petty crimes, conducting housekeeping chores in our little guard towers & just simply struggling to keep warm when the chilly summer fog rolled in. Major events, as usually portrayed in movies, i.e. boat, car & plane accidents involving multiple casualties; serious criminal activities with police chases; dramatic search & rescues... we're all, fortunately, very rare. That's not to say that some of this didn't occasionally occur. As a way to keep in good shape & have fun, we made time to compete with each other as teams in various beach related activities, i.e. run-swim-run, dory rowing, paddle boarding, simulated rescues & long distance ocean swims. Our best contenders joined those from other State Beach jurisdictions to form a major California team to compete against our highly respected Aussie counterparts & rivals from 'Down Under'. Cheers Mate!

🦺Pool & Beach Lifeguard

🏖️Coral Casino Beach & Cabana Club

Montecito, California, United States

Located on charming Butterfly Beach, near my 2nd home at Miramar Beach Historic landmark built in '37 Art deco design with Scandinavian contemporary furnishings Exclusively private club for rich & famous Secret hideaway for Hollywood elite Despite being member of bourgeois class, as were most of staff, I was able to acquire position as lifeguard for its olympic size pool & private beach Club regularly hosted various social events During 1 particular fundraiser, emceed by comedian Bob Crane ('65 sitcom "Hogan's Heroes") I played role in clown act requiring some of us fools, as comical distraction, to playfully jump off of 40' diving platform towering above pool near where several gorgeous bathing beauties were performing water ballet to enthralled audience Back in '64, our high school graduation class celebrated prom night at this popular club Proprietor Robert Stewart Odell, president of Allied Properties in San Francisco, also owned nearby historic Biltmore Hotel which opened in '27 Mediterranean, Moorish & Spanish Colonial Revival architecture surrounded by beautifully lush gardens with hidden courts, fountains & charming little bungalows In early '65, US Pres Lyndon B Johnson began committing our combat ground forces in Vietnam War, that started back in '50s Southeast Asian conflict with roots in French colonial period of 1800s Anti-war movement began with "teach-ins" on college campuses by leftist organization Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr successfully led 1000s of civil rights marchers from Selma Ala to state capitol in Montgomery, demonstrating for black American voter rights that was soon signed into law, along with Social Security Act, establishing Medicare & Medicaid. 🦺Pool Lifeguard

⛳La Cumbre Country Club

Santa Barbara, California, United States

As an ambitiously athletic 17 year old, recently certified by the American Red Cross, I was hired at this exclusive country club as their lifeguard. Conveniently located near my neighborhood on Barcelona Drive in the Hidden Valley area of Santa Barbara. My first real serious job with the responsibility of maintaining a private swimming pool and providing a clean, healthy, safe & pleasant aquatic environment for the bathers. La Cumbre (Span.summit) was officially established as an 18 hole golf course in 1918. Golfing on this beautiful hilltop location, with panoramic view of the sparkling blue Pacific, had been going on since before the turn of the 20th century. On July 1st 1963 the US Postal Services' Nationwide Improved Mail Service NIMS introduced Zone Improvement Plan or as we know it today, the ZIP Code. Sadly our country, as well as the rest of the world, was mourning the loss of beloved John F Kennedy, 35th President of the United States, to an assassin on Nov 22nd 1963. A week later, we'd receive a little bit of consolation with the birth of Beatlemania in the UK, following the Beatles release single "l Want To Hold Your Hand". The "Fab Four" spearheaded the "British Invasion" of America spreading their musical talents through our pop charts & culture in 1964. '60 Olympic gold medalist "Louisville Lip" Cassius Clay aka Muhammad Ali defeated Sonny Liston becoming heavyweight boxing champion of the world February 25th 1964. Magnitude 9.2 earthquake devastated Alaska with tsunamis extending down to California on March 27th 1964. Civil Rights Act signed into law July 2nd 1964 while racial, student & anti-Vietnam war unrest continued to rage throughout our country. Renowned Dr Martin Luther King Jr honored with Nobel Peace Prize Oct 14th 1964. Hippie subculture was in its early stages of development, attempting to influence revolutionary & political social changes through promotion of the psychedelic movement.
