Profile bio

About Patrick Kelley

I am a proud graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering and a concentration in propulsion and combustion. While obtaining my Master's at Georgia Tech, I was able to work with the Ben T. Zinn Aerospace Combustion Laboratory in the Unsteady Combustion Modeling division. This group used model-based simulations via computational fluid dynamics software to examine a wide array of experimental situations and to accurately create computational models for various experiments that had taken place or were concurrently happening in the combustion lab.I have worked as a Field Engineer for Schlumberger where I learned about Pressure Pumping, Stimulation/Fracturing, and the Completions side of the oilfield industry. I had the chance to attend both their Operational and Technical schools where I learned key concepts and theories about reservoir engineering. During this job, my fluid mechanics skills were tested as I had to model and analyze fluid systems for several different geological zones. My time at Schlumberger also allowed for my skills in teamwork, communication, and leadership to be utilized as I trained future engineers and aided in the management of my crew. I also developed quality assurance and quality control skills as they were a core concept to the company. This ensured services provided in the field met service standards and were the responsibility of the engineer to monitor and enforce. Lastly, this job exposed me to interdisciplinary engineering by having engineers from other areas such as completions or drilling properly collaborate onsite with myself to ensure all services rendered at the time were completed effectively and efficiently. The current job I have is as a Propulsion Engineer - Aerothermal Analyst for Northrop Grumman Hypersonic Center of Excellence in Elkton, MD. Here I analyze solid rocket motors using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to characterize fluid flow of propellant gases from the motor chamber to the nozzle exit. In addition to my CFD skills, I also use various thermal codes to determine ablative effects on the motor’s case insulation and nozzle hardware. I have experience in conducting preliminary trade studies/design analyses, post-test backfits, case and nozzle measurements, and thermal protection system sizing. Every day is new and exciting for me as I am constantly learning new techniques and given new problems to analyze. My time here at Northrop has allowed me to enhance my technical and developmental skills and grow as an engineer.

Listed skills include Oilfield, Petroleum Engineering, Petroleum, Drilling, and 11 others.
