Software developer for over 20 years. Started as a game developer with two published titles between 1999 and 2003. Continued with web development doing freelance work for local businesses including web design and development in JavaScript, Perl, PHP, and Java. Later moved on to working on software for mobile devices using mostly C# and C++. The product was a modular B2B app for logistics companies for tour planning and tracking. My role included writing new modules and customisations.The aftermath of the financial crisis in 2008 caused a shift towards consulting work from 2009 onwards. Roles and clients varied widely. One assignment involved close-to-the-metal software customisation for proprietary navigation devices in London (C++/assembly). Another role comprised developer support in a large project for a multi-national logistics company, involving 100+ programmers. This included preparing releases, providing tooling, performance optimisations, and interfacing with the QA team.Perhaps the most interesting and challenging task was supporting a large retailer migrating their inventory management system from custom IBM mainframe software to SAP. This required not only learning to work with and develop for mainframe operating systems (z/VSE) as well as understanding and modifying 30+ year old IBM high level assembly programs; but also acquiring domain knowledge in the field of wholesale trade as well as warehouse management. Work on the project included writing mainframe software for analysing and exporting data, planning and developing new tools (including user training), as well as helping out with daily operations.Finally I got back into web development working on a cloud-based SaaS built on NodeJS, NoSQL databases, and using a micro-service architecture . The product involved AI and big data in yet another industry entirely. Here I also dealt with dev-ops for the first time, primarily using AWS.
