Profile bio

About Patrick Limpens

I am a lecturer at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and researcher at Aeres University of Applied Sciences in Almere. At TU/e, I lecture in several courses related to regional and urban design, research, and strategy. Starting from systems thinking and transition theory, I teach bachelor's and master's students how to read urban systems and processes through spatial, political, socio-economic, and temporal perspectives, to identify problems and their root causes, and subsequently develop a short- and long-term strategy to leverage change. At Aeres, I research the governance aspects of greening cities towards adapting to climate change, increasing biodiversity, and improving urban health. Among others, I am involved in the two-year SIA-project ‘Nature Inclusive Area Development’ and the four-year Interreg-project ‘Biodiverse Cities’.

Listed skills include Graphic Design, Indesign, Autocad, Sketchup, and 6 others.

Responsible Lecturer Design For A Sustainable Future - 7Ea1B20 Bachelor Ii

Current

What should be designed in order to build a sustainable future for our society? And who should decide the direction of that innovation? Questions that have never been more relevant under the pressure of the simultaneous transformational challenges we face, like: Growing a thriving biosphere, adapting to increasing weather extremes, shaping a just housing market, stabilising increasing polarising politics, and creating a healthy food system, to name a few. Design for a Sustainable Future operates under this backdrop of challenges whose sheer scale could paralyse any dedicated action. The course, under the adagium ‘Think Globally, Act Locally’ teaches students how to approach these challenges and break them down into manageable, decisive action; how to do the right thing, and how to pick your battle. Thereby teaching them the basics of critical thinking, systems thinking, design thinking and transition science as necessary mental tools to deal with complex (or wicked) challenges.
