My main duties in my current role as a patent examiner include performing searches and examinations of patent applications, in order to identify similar existing inventions to applicants and ensure that the protection sought is distinguished from what already exists. Additionally, as the Group Search Specialist for my team of twelve, I am responsible for training colleagues and troubleshooting problems relating to the specialised software used during processing of applications, as well as testing changes and modifications made to this software in-house.Carrying out my primary duties as a Patent Examiner requires a very high level of attention to detail in identifying relevant patent documents and other existing disclosures of inventions, and I have had to quickly learn the necessary legal skills and details needed to carry out these duties. Use of Microsoft Office applications and add-ons developed by the Office is commonplace, and so I have become highly accustomed to learning how to use tools within our version of Office beyond those typically found in its suite of programs. I am also highly familiar with standard advanced features of Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. My frequent correspondence dealing with enquiries from patent applicants and their legal representatives requires great clarity, communication skills and professionalism both over the telephone and in writing. The quality and rate at which I completed patent examining work in addition to my more recently acquired duties as a Group Search Specialist resulted in my performance being assessed as “Outstanding” for the period between September 2017 and March 2018.I also have experience in customer-facing environments, having held a part-time job serving at Clarinda’s Tea Room on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and voluntary positions at the Inverleith House art gallery in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh as well as the Cancer Research UK shop in my hometown of Wrexham.
