As a staff writer, first for the Miami Herald and currently for the San Jose Mercury News, I have garnered a combined experience of 26 years in daily newspaper journalism. Most of that time I've worked as a general assignment reporter, and my assignments have taken me far and wide, giving me intimate knowledge of the communities of South Florida as well as the San Francisco Bay Area, where I was born and raised. I have written news and features, multi-part series and business stories, profiles and on-deadline narratives. I have interviewed thousands of people, and traveled throughout the United States for stories, from the attacks on the World Trade Center to Hurricane Katrina, from earthquakes to forest fires to floods.My assignments have also taken me overseas, where I covered the first Gulf War from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq and Turkey. I was assigned to Tirana, Albania during the Kosovo Crisis, and I've traveled throughout Europe and Asia on other stories.I love putting words together. I love travel. Newspaper journalism over nearly three decades has given me the chance to live out those dreams. Now, as newspapers struggle to redefine themselves, and journalists are increasing moving online and into multimedia, I am moving with them, learning the video and audio skills I'll need to support my storytelling as the methods are transformed in the coming years.
