Biomedical Team Leader
I was employed in the Histology department at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust as a Band 7 Biomedical Team Leader. As Training Officer I was responsible for leading on all training aspects for the histology department. This includes the development of new competency documentation for all staff including MLA, BMS, Administration and Clerical and Mortuary Technicians. These had to be compliant with UKAS accreditation to ISO:15189 (2012) and during the accreditation process in April 2016 the competencies were deemed acceptable by UKAS.Dissection lead built on my previous experience in dissection. I was responsible for delivering routine dissection on specimens in rotation with Band 6 BMS'. I was also responsible for delivering the training for dissection to BMS' new to dissection and biopsy transfer. I have built on my previous knowledge in dissection combining this with the knowledge from the Expert Role in BMS Dissection course ran by North England Pathology and Screening Education Centre. Combining these I started developing dissection skills for advanced dissection including colonic cancers and gynae cancer cases. This role also required first line supervision and management skills. This built on previous experience gained as Laboratory Lead in Bowel Cancer Screening. During this role I was been involved in following HR process regarding capability both formal and informal resulting in a successful conclusion. I completed appraisal of MLA and administration staff on an annual basis, ensuring successful annual review and the setting of clear manageable targets. I was responsible for the weekly rota, making sure all areas were staffed adequately to produce maximum efficiency and delivery of daily consultant workload. As IT lead for the department I was responsible for all IT enquirers for the histology department. This included working with the Winpath system and ensuring that it was utilised to provide the best results.
Specialist Biomedical Scientist
The post involved routine histological techniques including section cutting, paraffin wax embedding, quality control of routine haematoxylin and eosin stained sections, performing specialist stains and dissection of specimens. As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist the post also included troubleshooting day to day performance of the laboratory such as staining issues and sectioning issues. In this post I also had to demonstrate leadership skills within different sections of the laboratory including Main Laboratory and Dissection, The role also included the overseeing of the breaks and ensuring that there was enough staff provided for delivery and adherence of turnaround times. When leading in the dissection area of the department the core requirements are troubleshooting issues which may arise daily the dissection of specimens in BMS dissection, ensuring the tissue transfer section of dissection is staffed with adequate staff per workload, liaising with consultant pathologists to ensure that complex specimens are dissected and ensuring the dissected specimens are loaded onto the processors for overnight processing. During my time at the histology department I expanded my dissection repertoire. This included LLETZ biopsies, gall bladders, appendix, dermatology specimens such as melanoma excisions and marked excisions. I am also competent in the opening of complex specimens for fixation ensuring that these are not compromised for consultant dissection, including colons, kidneys and testis for cancer and benign conditions. At all times I adhered to standards outlined by the Royal College of Pathologists and governance standards surrounding specimen dissection. As part of this role I was responsible for leading on information technology. This involved trouble shooting issues which may arise with software issues. Editing and evolving Winpath software to ensure that it is fit for purpose as procedures change.
Bowel Cancer Screening Laboratory Lead
I was previously employed within the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, Eastern Hub as the Laboratory Lead. This post involved the day to day line management of the laboratory section of the screening programme. This post involved, monitoring laboratory performance including positive checks and individual performance, attending operational management and senior management meetings, chairing section meetings, developing new laboratory procedures, recruitment and development for new members of staff and other routine line management processes. As my role as Laboratory Lead I carried out annual personal development reviews for Screening Officers within the department. These are key to staff development and involve setting targets for development and highlighting issues of concern. As Training Officer it was also my responsibility to plan all annual reviews for the year and ensure they are completed and relevant documentation completed. Within the role I also had quality management responsibilities, this involves the monitoring and development of quality processes within the screening programme. I monitored the departments External Quality assurance schemes, introducing a new assurance scheme, writing new standard operating procedures and conducting audits to meet CPA standards.
