As a pod staff I have to ensure safety among the milieu while also being able to adhere to the needs of the youth and help manage their behaviors in a positive way. I utilize Motivational Interviewing and Verbal Defense and Influence to de-escalate youth. Supervise pre-adjudicated and adjudicated youth in a secure setting. Intervene in potentially volatile situations. Conduct searches of individuals and rooms for contraband items and the security of doors, windows, and grounds. Facilitate all agency groups as trained with integrity that facilitate a safe environment. Support the creation of a trauma responsive environment through seeking to understand what these youth have experienced. Provide immediate intervention in individual and group crisis situations. Use appropriate physical force when necessary and administer appropriate discipline. Utilize computer software to document incident reports when required and conduct disciplinary hearings as assigned. Document observations, room restrictions, use of restraints, room assignments, pod rosters, and level information prior to the conclusion of a shift. Attend mandatory training such as CPR, crisis intervention, contraband detection and control, use of restraints, youth and room search procedures, escape and emergency plans, gang issues, and report writing.
