I started inspecting containers in 1981, working for an inspection company named "Maintainer". At that time Maintainer was supposedly the first 'world-wide' container inspection company. Our main customer then was a pioneer in container leasing named Container Leasing Corporation ("CTI") which at that time was the biggest leasing company with an inventory of about 200k Teus. In 1983, I joined a depot Kontena Nasional Berhad, which was 1 of only 2 container depots in Port Klang, as a senior inspector. I sat for and passed the IICL 3 examination in 1984. In1985, I joined Unicon Intl, a US based global container inspection company. In 1991 when the first container manufacturing company started in Malaysia, I was lucky to be trained by Unicon's experienced production line inspectors from USA, Japan and S. Korea. The technical knowledge which these 3 masters William P. Stenwick(USA), Akira Tanaka(Japan) and YS Song(S.Korea) passed on to me was invaluable. The new production line inspection not only enabled me to gain knowledge, but it also allowed me the privilege to meet many overseas colleagues like Robby Looymans(Netherlands), John Piwtorak(USA), Stephan Sanders(Belgium) etc. After grooming by my masters, Unicon had new production line inspections at factories in Thailand, Indonesia, India and China. I was then given the responsibility to oversee the training and inspections in these factories. In 1994, I left Unicon Intl to start my own inspection company " Twenty Forty Container Services" providing new build production line inspection, off/on hires as well as depot audits. In 2010, my company was appointed by CMC Intl an Europe based inspection company to conduct inspection work and depot audits. Among the normal depot audits, I had also conducted audits for a major liner at Pelepas Brigantine in Johor Bahru, at Siam Shoreside in Lat Krabang, Thailand and Brigantine in Taiwan. In 2015, my company was appointed by Smartainer, a Shanghai based inspection company. Beside conducting depot audits at home, I had also conducted 3 weeks of depot audits in Si Racha, Thailand. Around the same year my company was appointed by TE Carrier, another Shanghai based inspection company. It is the year of the Rabbit 2023 and I am 68yrs old coming 69yrs. in November. Well, time is not on my side. I had very good mentors whose technical knowledge had inspired and motivated me to continue being on the ground kicking dust, soaking in the rain and roasting in 31-34 degrees heat. Now I only want to share my knowledge about M&R to whoever needs it.
