Completed a 5 week physiotherapy placement working in elderly rehabilitation. Gained experience in working in both a ward and community based setting. Valuable experience in subjective and objective assessments, clinical reasoning, treatment planning and the application of outcome measures such as Balance Berg, Tinetti Gait and Balance, Elderly Mobility Scale and Functional Reach. Also gained experience in running pulmonary rehabilitation programme classes for COPD patients and falls groups for patients with impaired balance. Gained an insight into the role of the Physiotherapist in a multi-disciplinary team and how they integrate with other healthcare professions in the treatment of elderly patients. Experienced first hand the role of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers and Nurses in the discharge planning of patients. Gained experience in treating and communicating with patients with complex disorders such as Parkinson's Disease, Stroke, COPD, Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia, Depression, Learning Difficulties, Fractures, Total Knee and Hip Replacements. Learned how to alter my communication skills when talking to different types of patients. Also gained experience in treating post-op orthopedic patients particularly foot and ankle surgery patients, measuring for elbow crutches, teaching patients how to correctly use crutches and teaching patients how to mobilise up and down stairs with crutches. Gained experience in the use of different transfer equipment such as wheeled zimmerframes, pulpit frames, sara-steady, elbow crutches, hoists, slide sheets and self propelled wheelchairs. Also became efficient at reading and recording patients notes and observations such as blood pressure, SaO2 levels, temperature, respiratory rate and heart rate.
