As data becomes increasingly useful, organizations need people who are not just skilled with data, but can apply them to various fields. I want to help fill that need. I am proficient with various quantitative tools, as well as the qualitative skills needed to apply them effectively.🏗️Automation is simple but effective. It saves time, increases transparency, and makes it possible to alter a workflow without manually-redoing each step, decreasing the risk of human error.🧮Statistics makes data-driven decision-making possible. By transforming data and fitting it into models, one opens up a whole new world of possibilities for finding insights.📈Data visualization makes it easier for non-technical staff to participate in data-driven decision-making, making the approach viable for most organizations.🌎Geospatial information system (GIS) greatly expands what data can be incorporated into one’s analysis, from census tracts to remote sensing with satellite imagery.🤖Machine learning allows for powerful predictive models, using large amounts of data to find near-imperceptible trends.📚Policy analysis skills allow one to use these technical tools while understanding the peculiarities of a given subject matter, and communicate the nuances in one’s analysis to others more effectively.🏃But, at the end of the day, the data analyst’s work is only as good as they are diligent about their craft. Data analysis requires diligence in patiently investigating potential complications in one’s analysis, and not cutting corners.Having graduated last June, I’m still figuring out where I want to apply these skills. Renewable Energy ConsultantUs Army Mar 2024 - Jun 2024Arlington, Virginia, United StatesAs part of a consulting team working with The US Army’s Office of Energy Initiatives, we were tasked with identifying best practices and key challenges regarding their energy procurement, with respect to their goals of decarbonization and resiliency. Through extensive research and meetings, we fine-tuned a circulatable slide deck and memo, as well as a prototype Excel dashboard for automatically pulling and cleaning large amounts of data from across the federal government. -
Student AnalystUc San Diego Sep 2022 - Jun 2024I developed a Python algorithm to pull, clean, and analyze hundreds of thousands of rows from the eBird API.I assessed whether privatization in China had a different impact on profitability between those which privatized into cooperatives and non-cooperatives, using a fixed effects event study model to reduce the influence of complicating factors.I picked a topic proposed by someone from the California Public Utilities Commission and assessed every proposed transmission line upgrade by proximity to ecologically-important spaces, retracing the CEC’s 2023 Land-Use Screens for Electric System Planning methodology.I engaged in extensive research and political theory to explain how the policymaking design of the OSH Act unintuitively altered the power dynamic between OSHA regulators and businesses. -
InternFda Mar 2024 - May 2024Rockville, Maryland, United StatesI transcribed large amounts of automated message audio files from their Cisco database, as well as identifying what specific sub-organization within FDA the given files belonged to. Exceeded my assigned quotas and took on additional work, helping the team avoid bottlenecks and finish quicker. -
InternOsha Whistleblower Protection Progrgam Region 9 Jul 2023 - Aug 2023San Diego, California, United StatesFirst, I automated the team's KPIs. I created an R algorithm, communicating extensively with the local program analyst and the supervisory investigator to ensure the legally-complex KPIs were correctly calculated.Second, I crafted the visualizations for the annual performance showcase, including the team’s executive. Given notes on what generally each slide’s visual(s) should accomplish, I delivered around 10 separate visuals ranging in complexity, each tailor-made. The team was very happy with the new visuals, and I was told they would even be presented later to the head of OSHA.Finally, I implemented a dashboard for the supervisory investigator's quarterly performance reviews. I designed a cyber-secure HTML dashboard in R which provides valuable tables and visuals for each investigator, discussing with the supervisory investigator to figure out what statistics would be most valuable. Before departing, I developed an elaborate Microsoft Word guide for non-technical audiences, concerning setup and basic maintenance.
