The test and calibration laboratory at Diamond SA is accredited since March 2002 by the Swiss Accreditation Service SAS as testing laboratory for fibre optic components and as calibration laboratory for fibre optic measurement instruments in accordance with the international standard ISO / IEC 17025. The accreditation is recognized worldwide through the ILAC MRA.As scientific collaborator I actively participated in the drafting of the complete management and technical documentation and in the definition and implementation of all measurement, test and calibration procedures in order to obtain the accreditation of the laboratory by the Swiss Accreditation Service SAS.As head of the laboratory I define and manage all customer assignments, from simple measurements and tests up to complete and extensive qualification programs on fibre optic components manufactured by Diamond SA, for telecom, space, aeronautical and defence applications, according to national and international standards as well as customer specific standards.In particular, we carried out the complete qualification program of Diamond SA products AVIM and Mini-AVIM for the European Space Agency ESA in order to officially include the components in the Qualified Part List QPL of the European Space Components Coordination ESCC.As testing laboratory with focussed competence in fibre optic components we carry out measurements of the optical performances like insertion loss, return loss, polarization and wavelength dependent loss, optical discontinuity and polarization extinction ratio and we carry out environmental tests at high and low temperature and high humidity, mechanical tensile, flexing and torsion tests, as well as sine and random vibration and mechanical shock tests.As calibration laboratory we carry out calibration of fibre optic measurement instruments like Optical Power Meters and OTDRs. Furthermore, we manage the measurement instrument database, we define the calibration procedures and we perform the calibration of all measurement instruments in use at Diamond SA.As internal centre of competence in fibre optic components we also guarantee technical support to all other departments at Diamond SA, we carry out specific training in fibre optic measurement techniques, we perform extensive failure analysis and we actively participate in the proposal, drafting and publication of international standards of the IEC committee as well as other national and international standardization bodies in the field of fibre optic components and measurement and test techniques.
