I'm a travel writer, teacher and former New York Times editor now living in Thailand and Colorado. For the past eight years, I've been writing travel stories out of Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East and Africa. From 2018 to 2022 I was based in Vietnam, where I taught business communications at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City. Before venturing to Southeast Asia in 2018, I was based for two years each in New York, London and Cairo. My travel stories have appeared in publications including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Bloomberg, ESPN and Outdoor Swimmer.During the Covid-19 pandemic, I switched gears from travel writing to full-time teaching, instructing 6th- and 7th-grade students in public schools across Saigon. In mid-2021 I joined the International School of Business at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City as a lecturer in business communications. Mostly I've written about travel trends and my adventures, from swimming in caves in north central Vietnam to cycling through the desert in West Africa, from freediving in the Red Sea to climbing an active volcano in Tanzania. From 2013 to 2015 I was the Deputy Business Editor for Europe for The New York Times in the London office, working with reporters across Europe and with editors in Paris, New York and Asia as part of The Times' expansion of international coverage. Before that, I was based in New York as The Times weekend editor for Business Day, in charge of the Monday section and liaison for Business with the front page for Sunday and Monday. I was the Finance Editor for The Times in 2011 and 2012, with responsibilities including banking and markets coverage, and editing columnists Floyd Norris and Andrew Ross Sorkin. At the Charlotte Observer, I was a lead editor on investigative projects including a 2007 housing series that was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for the 2008 Public Service Gold Medal. As the paper's Business Editor, our work earned 23 Best in Business awards from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. I was a reporter and editor for 20 years at The Charlotte Observer, where I led the business news department. I started reporting in 1988 in Philadelphia at The Inquirer. I'm a native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and a graduate of Temple University in Philadelphia.
