I started to write seriously (if you can call the humour genre serious) around ten years ago. I published my first novel, Cupid's Pursuit, through the self publishing medium and I followed this up with three more novels featuring the same central characters, thus producing a 'series.' The alternative to self-publishing was to trawl through endless lists of publishers to find someone who might be interested in what I had to say. Although I have the patience, I didn't consider that the time would be well spent. I felt it was better to spend the time creating something, getting it out there and letting it speak for me. The audience is a good judge. That said, I am aware that when starting anything new, you can and will make mistakes. Just recently I redrafted my first book (Cupid's Pursuit) to tighten it up and add a little more polish. Although it is the original story, it is now a second edition.I write the way I want to which means, although I have read a lot of the 'guidance', I prefer to do it my own way in my own style. I am quite overwhelmed by the amount of guidance (do's and don'ts) out there for writers in fact, but, whilst respectful of the intention, I just let it flow naturally.... then tidy it all up. I believe there is a balance between following good guidance and applying your own style, And by that latter remark, I don't mean ignoring the basics of trying to apply good English, spelling and punctuation. In the end it is about entertaining the reader. That is my aim along with fine tuning my style which is light and easy on the consciousness... I hope... but it doesn't mean the story can't have some complexities. Humour gives you licence to go where you choose. I quite like that freedom.
