About Patrick Swan
Postdoctoral researcher in the field of obesity and diabetes, with a focus on skeletal muscle metabolism. My PhD (Metabolic Medicine) and postdoctoral research focus on elucidating the novel role of α-MSH in skeletal muscle glucose metabolism, establishing it as a new therapeutic target to improve glucose control in metabolic diseases. Our direct collaborative group on this project includes the labs of Professors Michael Cowley, Carel le Roux, and Alex Miras.Using my expertise in translational research, I have lead pre-clinical studies (primary cell culture, rodent models of metabolic disease, functional/bioanalytical assays, gene expression analysis) in tandem with metabolic experiments in humans volunteers (insulin clamps, glucose tolerance tests, muscle biopsies) while working in multidisciplinary teams across several universities.I am eager to continue my research career in diabetes, obesity, and metabolism.

I traveled to Monash University, Melbourne to work in the Michael Cowley and Stephanie Simonds lab for 3 months as part of an active collaboration. While there I assisted with in vivo PK/PD and physiology studies, radioimmunoassays, mass spectrometry, and gained further experience with primary cell culture models.

As part of my PhD project, I was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Imperial College London CRF under the supervision of Prof. Alex Miras. In this position I assisted in conducting the first study in which alpha-MSH was infused into healthy volunteers to investigate it's impact on glucose homeostasis.
