As a college graduate in 2018, I entered the working world with what I considered to be a severely lacking resume. Compared to my peers that graduated with me, all of whom seemed to have had 10 different incredible internships and knew exactly what they wanted to do for the rest of their life, I felt completely overwhelmed and lost. I did not know what I enjoyed doing in a professional setting, nor did I know what I would be good at in a professional setting.However, over the last 3 years working as a Product Manager for an exciting and fast paced team building a Direct-to Consumer annuity brand, I know exactly what I enjoy doing, what I'm good at doing, and more importantly, what I would like to learn and do in the future.A large part of this newfound self-awareness is due to the myriad of jobs and tasks that I have been asked to fulfill. These roles include prioritizing new features, bugs, and infrastructure improvements, designing new User Experience flows from scratch, contributing to the Domain Driven redesign of our back-end platform, owning the Quality Assurance process for select features, redesigning our analytics framework to track customer interactions on our User Interface, managing a redesign of our parent company's website, being the front-line of defense in problem solving for technical issues that customers run into, gathering requirements from business partners and translating them into technical requirements for the development team, identifying and gathering key site metrics to help inform roadmap decisions, and building complex spreadsheets to guide the implementation of product calculations such as interest calculations, tax withholdings, customer requested withdrawals, etc.Through managing these roles and others as our team reacts to different needs/priorities on a weekly or daily basis, I have been able to get an up close and personal look at the holistic process that leads to code being pushed into the world for customers and prospects to see. This in turn has helped me to identify my strengths and passions in a professional setting to a degree that freshly graduated me would never have comprehended.I now realize that I am passionate about building creative, problem solving, digital products that are both built to scale and can pivot easily to respond to changes in market trends and consumer needs. Overseeing the entire lifecycle of product development and collaborating with intelligent and creative colleagues has been more exciting than I could imagine, and I look forward to seeing where my professional path leads me.
