I am Associate Professor of Instruction in Political Science at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP),the nation's number one Latinx research university. I teach undergraduate classes delivered both in English and Spanish languages. I teach the required classes for undergraduates in political science, as well as upper division classes for Liberal Arts majors in Law and Society, Human Rights in the Americas, Immigrant Family Separation and Reunification, Violence and Crime in Ciudad Juárez and El Paso, and Drug Use, Abuse and Trafficking.I specialize in delivering high-quality classes which have extensive content focused on our Chihuahua/West Texas region and its population. My expertise as a teacher lies in delivering classes across the international border between Texas and Mexico using a collaborative online model with our partner institutions at the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua, and the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez.My diverse teaching interests correspond to a wide research portfolio constructed through academic qualifications and professional experience as an investigator and journalist. I hold a PhD in Latin American History from the University of Texas at Austin and an LL.M. in International Human Rights Law from the University of Essex. I also hold a Master's in Latin American Studies from Cambridge. My BA (Hons) is from the London School of Economics and Political Science.At UT Austin, I wrote for the student newspaper, the Daily Texan. This experience then led me to write for the Texas Observer. Over the years I have covered Mexico, the United States and Latin America for international news outlets. I have bylines at The Guardian, ITV News, United Press International, BBC Radio 4, The Daily Telegraph, The Texas Observer, and the North American Conference on Latin America (NACLA).Major work appears at The Guardian and focused on family separation under the Trump Administration. As a journalist, I managed to enter the Karnes, TX ICE Family Detention Center and interviews immigrant fathers and sons caught up in the Trump Administration's Immigration Enforcement in 2018.
