Developed formulations of blue sensitive (~405 nm) photopolymer media for holographic data storage (HDS) and a curing technique to speed up the media fabrication process.

Developed/refined fabrication processes for HPDLC (holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal) based actively tunable fiber-optic components that involved polymer materials selection based on their thermal, mechanical, optical, and chemical properties. Led a multi-disciplinary team to improve performance uniformity of the devices and successfully identified and resolved several key issues.

Led an engineering team to design and concept-proof LC (liquid crystal) based re-configurable optical add/drop multiplexer (R-OADM) module. Developed a fabrication process for LC based optical switches that led to the first product shipment of the company. The major task is to choose adhesives that have low shrinkage, low CTE, good moisture resistance, etc.

Formulated new UV-curable polymer resins as hard cladding for multi-mode silica optical fibers that deliver light in medical applications. Developed an in-line chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process to deposit hermetic carbon coating on silica optical fibers that lowered H2O and H2 permeability.

Murray Hill, Nj

Synthesized and characterized new high molecular weight vinyl ether oligomers for optical fiber coating formulation. Successfully developed new UV-transparent polymer coatings that enable to write fiber gratings directly through the coating. These vinyl ether based coatings offer comparable chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties to conventional coatings. Developed liquid crystal formulations containing an UV-curable monomer for fixed spacer technology in liquid crystal displays (LCDs).
