The Sussex Community Rail Partnership is a voluntary not or profit partnership which aims to encourage people to travel by train and to engage people in their local railway, we work with communities situated around the rural rail lines on a wide and ever growing series of projects:We do this by:Working with transport operators and local communities.Supporting and encouraging community projects.Facilitating projects which give the community a sense of ownership and pride in theirstations.Encouraging rural tourism and therefore helping to support local economies.Working with schools and local councils to educate children about rail travel andsafety.Working with community groups to help remove barriers to travel.Encouraging car-free and sustainable travel.Producing award winning guides to the train lines and local attractions.More specifically we work towards delivering our six core outcomes. Delivered the first fully zero emission buses in the city region with the 20 bus HyBus FCEV project which was designed to not only lay the foundations of an environmental revolution but also set a new ‘Best in Britain’ onboard passenger experience. Created the regional zero emission bus decarbonisation strategy which will not only deliver the Mayoral commitment of a zero emission bus fleet of up to 1,200 buses but could also see buses acting as a powerful enabling force for the much wider decarbonisation of road transport in the region. The various strands of both the HyBus project and the decarbonisation strategy formed the basis of an entry for the Environmental Innovation category at the 2023 UK Bus Awards and I was immensely proud that this work was recognised by judges with a third placed Bronze Award in both a strong field of projects but also a record number of entries for this category.

As part of the combined senior management team that runs Brighton & Hove Buses, Metrobus and Spirit if Sussex Coaches, I work within the Commercial Team. Current projects include supporting our Engineering Director & Head of Engineering in the commercialisation of zero emission fleet where I have attracted significant funding to introduce 20 fuel cell electric buses, work with a number of property developers to provide high quality public transport options to new residential and employment spaces, two of which could lead to our first trials of autonomous first mile/last mile solutions, working with a number of regional stakeholders as a key regeneration partner to deliver the Crawley Growth Fund Deal and leading within our Group to represent bus in the exciting new ‘Billion Journeys’ Innovation Labs project which invites disruptive technology into the bus and rail industry in an effort to improve customer journeys. In addition to this, I also engage widely with a variety of our key stakeholders, working with employers to offer their staff alternative ways of getting to and from work, working with our rail industry partners to encourage better connectivity between bus and train travel, working with local businesses to share our passengers with trusted local businesses. Other projects include growing our off bus sales to enable faster boarding and alighting, developing our emerging Leisure offer and overseeing growth of 50%, 45% and 20% in the last three seasons on our Brighton City Sightseeing Tour and the launch of two new additional tour routes in 2018, relaunching, rebranding and refocusing our Spirit of Sussex Coaching & Private Hire business. Last but by no means least, I also provide line management support to our experienced Revenue Protection Teams to assist customers in purchasing the correct tickets for their needs and reduce fraud.

Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) are an American idea that has been imported into the UK with one or two modifications.The basic idea is that businesses can decide on a package of measures they think their area needs and then vote on whether they want to pay for them or not. If the majority vote yes (and they represent over half of the rateable value of the businesses that vote) in a formal referendum, the money is collected as an extra levy on their Uniform Business Rates (UBR) and it is ring-fenced and cannot be used for The first Brighton BID was introduced in September 2006 and consisted of around 300 traders all located in the heart of Brighton – parts of the North Laine, North Street and parts of The Lanes. During April 2011 the businesses in the BID were re-balloted, along with the addition of traders in Western Road and Preston Street to see if there was an appetite to enlarge the BID area.The vote was positive and on the 1st July 2011 the new BID came in to being. Lasting for 5 years, it was renewed for a third term in 2016 and now encompasses 517 city centre retail and hospitality businesses. The new BID covers Western Road, Preston Street, North Street, parts of both The Lanes and The North Laine.The Brighton BID was formed to create a thriving, safe, clean and vibrant city centre that residents and visitors want to come back to time and time again. Brilliant Brighton will focus on creating a safer environment for visitors, producing exciting Christmas light displays and dressing the city for summer with hanging baskets and bunting.We are also working with businesses to support trading in other ways by reducing overheads and providing business support. By working in partnership with agencies such as the Police, City Council, the Business Crime Reduction Partnership and transport operators the BID is at the forefront of strategic thinking that will benefit Brighton City Centre for years to come.

Sovereign Ward

I was re-elected to serve the residents of Sovereign Ward on Eastbourne Borough Council in May 2011. This year I have served in the Shadow Cabinet, holding the Environment & Amenities brief and as a member of the cross party Strategic Property Board, a member of the Licensing Committee and a Non-Executive Director of Eastbourne Homes and Chairman of it's Finance & Corporate Services Committee. During the previous 2013/2014 Civic year, I served as Chairman of Scrutiny, member of the Conservation Area Advisory Committee and a Non-Executive Director of Eastbourne Homes (the council's arms length social housing management company) in addition to my existing roles on the Licensing Committee and the Joint Action Group (JAG) with public service bodies and local Emergency Services. I also attend the Neighbourhood Panel meetings in Sovereign Harbour, Kingsmere & Kings Park and Langney Point & St Anthonys areas.

I have been recruited as Service Manager to help transform the Hailsham dealership into the John Deere 'Dealer of Tomorrow'.Key respondibilities include reform of the Service Department (Workshop Facility & Mobile Customer Support Functions), providing clear team leadership, redefining team roles where necessary, developing strategies to deliver industry leading customer service, improve customer retention, increase team productivity, efficiency and profitability.

I also have extensive experience in automotive aftersales management, and can provide cover and/or training in department management, boosting growth & profitability, understanding KPI's, quality management, implementation & monitoring, customer relationship management, HR issues and getting the best from members of their team.

Started in late 2006 in response to the closure or re franchising of many former MG Rover dealers throughout Sussex and beyond.Very quickly gained a reputation for great customer care and technical excellence through initiatives like the world's first 5 year head gasket guarantee and fixed price servicing scheme for the K'series Rover engine.I was appointed to the XPart UK Dealer Advisory Board in 2007 until my departure from the company and we became the sole MG Motor sales dealer in Sussex in 2008. Further service expansion came as Jaguar, Land Rover & Mini independent servicing specialisms were introduced.

Eastbourne Buses Limited was 80% part owned by Eastbourne Borough Council (remaining 20% owned by French Transport specialist Keolis). The Council appointed four non-executive Directors to the board (two from the controlling Group and two from the opposition Group). During this time my group were in control of the council and therefore I served as Chairman of the Board during this period.Responsibilities included monitoring business performance and financial accounting and guiding the Executive Directors in the role of a critical friend. During my time as Chairman, board meetings moved from on an adhoc basis to regular monthly meetings with full reporting across more areas of the business than ever before. Detailed analysis was carried out on revenue generated from each service operated which enabled resources to be directed more effectively to ensure that passenger growth was generated faster. Further analysis was carried out on costs of operation and revenue with resuting cost saving strategies and staff re-organisation put in place to limit ticket price rises to a minimum. A fleet buying strategy was put in place which lead to standardisation and further savings on maintenance, a comparitively low average age profile and at the time, one of the highest proportion of low floor vehicles in operation of any municipal operator. Easy to read electronic Hanover destination equipment was introduced on almost all vehicles and a joint project was introduced between East Sussex County Council & Eastbourne Buses to deliver Real Time Information screens at 13 trial locations around our operating area.I left the board of Eastbourne Buses when leaving Eastbourne Borough Council in May 2007. The subsequent Liberal Democrat administration sold Eastbourne Buses Limited to Stagecoach Group during the following 18 months.

Furthermore I was Cabinet Member for Planning & Economic Regeneration from November 2006 to May 2007.
