I completed an unusual independent study option in Environmental Design at the University of Utah. My extensive experience in performance lighting added strong technical skills to the formal architectural design and behavioral science training I received. After working with Rob Wolsh Lighting and Jules G. Horton Lighting Design in New York City, I helped open the West Coast Office of Grenald Associates, where I was Senior Associate for three years prior to forming Patrick B. Quigley & Associates, (PBQA) Inc. in 1985. After 34 years and over a 150 Team and lighting design awards at PBQA, i joined the amazing landscape architecture firm and long time client Design Workshop (DW). At DW I am enjoying my role as Lighting Design Principal, charged with overseeing lighting at our eight offices located across the U.S..I am characterized by a highly creative energy, unquenchable enthusiasm for the work and tenaciousness in seeing the project through to a successful conclusion. My design process, based on “choreographing” sequences of lit visual events, has become well known and is chronicled in Professor Marc Schiler’s book, “Simplified Design of Building Lighting” and Sage Russell’s “The Architecture of Light”. This choreographic process integrates well with my ability to understand the design team's aesthetic message and to turn the project's site and architectural opportunities into a dynamic nighttime extrapolation of that vision. I have attracted a loyal client base and a series of important commissions including the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial on the National Capitol Mall, the Abdulaziz Bin Fahd Abdulaziz palace complex in Saudi Arabia, the Pasadena Civic Center Master Plan, the Winter Games’ Olympic Village in Salt Lake City, the San Diego Central Library and the Star, Crown and Regal Princess cruise vessels. I am the recipient of the "Honor Award" for Allied Professionals given by the California Council of the AIA, and separate "Certificates of Recognition" from the California State Assembly, California State Senate and the United States House of Representatives for my firms' contribution to lighting design and the built environment. I recently received the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the Illumination Engineering Society / L.A. Chapter (IES).I am able to separate myself from my lighting design passion only when someone puts a gardening trowel, a pair of skies, or a Guinness in my hand.
