Electrical Engineering Intern
I worked on several different projects throughout my internship. I did verification testing on newly fabricated PCBS, including identifying, debugging, and fixing and error in the schematic. I created 20+ Altium library components, including creating footprints, symbols, and parameters. I created a second revision of a test fixture PCB by adding new connectors and rerouting a significant section of the PCB layout. This taught me PCB design basics, including best practices with VIAs and ground planes. Finally, I was in charge of a major PCB update for a board that drives stepper motors. I was responsible for component selection, updating the schematic, microcontroller pin mappings, redesigning power architecture, component creation, and documentation.
Engineering Intern
My main task for the internship was to create a fixture to test microcontroller-driven PCBs used to transmit ultrawideband signals. The test fixture would detect faults before the PCBs are sent to production. I communicated with the PCBs over UART and RS485, sampled voltages with a DAQ, and detected LEDs with a photoresistor. I also wrote a full GUI-driven python application to power the test fixture. The app is multi-threaded and object oriented so it runs smoothly and can be easily expanded upon later. The GUI was designed with an emphasis on user experience, with as much of the functionality automated as possible. Results are automatically uploaded to an excel spreadsheet or database.
Engineering Intern
During the internship, I researched and tested IR depth cameras to determine feasibility for use in autonomous vehicles. I created a proof-of-concept object detection using computer vision and I model I trained to outline batteries and return their approximate distance from the camera. I also helped with other miscellaneous roles such as micro-soldering and replacing an IC chip on a broken PCB, assembling a test bench for communication handset, wrote code to interface with a DAQ module, and bug fixed code that was automating a DC power supply. I worked alongside a boss / mentor and another intern who I guided through many projects as he was much newer to computer science.
