NR-1 was the Navy's only nuclear powered, deep submersible submarine. A three-man crew in each section consisting of an OOD, EOOW, and Junior OOD operated this sophisticated research vehicle. Crewmembers were hand-selected by the Director, Naval Reactors and assigned all nuclear and operational duties including Engineering Officer of the Watch, Engineering Laboratory Technician, Engineroom Operator, and Sonar Operator. Additional duties included Auxiliary Maintenance Officer with operational and maintenance oversight of hydraulic systems, ventilation and lifesupport systems, robotic manipulator arm, and external support equipment. Used U.S. Navy Diver qualification to complete several complex underwater repairs, including a first-time waterborne replacement of the robotic arm.

Responsible to the Asst. Sec. of Energy (NNSA) in the areas of Submarine Projects, Nuclear Quality Assurance, and Radiological Controls. Day-to-day collateral duties also included DOE Office Physical/IT Security Manager, and Nuclear Operations "check operator". Additionally, periodically assigned to INPO-style "evaluation teams" where I performed organizational reviews of public and private naval repair and construction shipyards in the areas of Training, Weld Engineering, QA, RADCON, Emergency Planning, and Maintenance. As a self-regulating organization, duties also included an NRC-equivalent regulatory function, as outlined in Presidential Executive Order 12344.

Responsible to COMSUBPAC for corporate level oversight and governance of the Navy's Deep Submergence program. Duties included periodic deep submergence program audits to certifiy continued operations for deep submergence assets.

Three years of experience as a Nuclear Operations Instructor for initial qualification/certification of nuclear operators and maintenance technicians. Responsibilities included lesson plan development, classroom instruction, on the job training (OJT), technical performance examinations (TPE), and overall nuclear operations "hands on" training. Also, certified Radiation Workers during initial nuclear power plant training.
