Director - Cloud Engineering And Operations
As the Director of Cloud Automation and Services, I lead a global team of DevOps Engineers responsible for the design, implementation, operationalization and continuous improvement of VMware’s portfolio of cloud automation services. To this end, I oversee all aspects of engineering lifecycle along with a cross-functional team of technology Leaders to help mature our automation and microservices architectures into highly scalable cloud native solutions. This is achieved through a hierarchal approach that first focuses on physical automation (IaC - HaaS - SDN, switches, servers, storage), then Virtualization services (CaC- IaaS – ESX, vSphere, SDDC, AWS, GCP), then platform services (PaaS – Docker, K8s) and finally application services (SaaS) to create an elastic resource framework upon which all dependent services are predicated.
Sr. Manager - Cloud Engineering And Operations
I was hired at Pivotal to lead their new Cloud Platforms and Services team to not only be a cost effective alternative to Public Cloud but to also be a feature rich platform to showcase our latest technologies. Given the dynamic nature of this startup, I had to first redesign the Cloud Operations delivery framework to be more Agile so it could keep pace with the rapid product release cycle. With this, the first service we focused on was HaaS where through automation and orchestration (Ansible, Chef, Foreman, PowerCLI, Puppet, Salt, Python) we could create a fluid platform upon which all other Cloud Services would be predicated. This coupled with emerging solutions from our partner companies (SDN, vSAN, OOS) allowed us to create a true software defined data center (SDDC) in which all aspects of the Cloud Platform were automated and dynamic. From there, we extended our automation to install and configure the higher level services and applications that comprise our entire Cloud Service Portfolio. For our PaaS offering, we use our own Pivotal Cloud Foundry coupled with an extensive Marketplace of services including: MongoDB, Redis, Casandra, RabbitMQ, Gemfire, etc. which our DevOps team utilizes to build the applications that run our enterprise. For our IaaS, we leverage both our partner solutions (vRA, NSX, vSAN) as well as Open Source (OpenStack) so we can align to both internal and external customer requirements. Given our extensive use of external cloud providers I also work in concert with our finance and executive teams to apply governance, management and accountability to the brokering of workloads on AWS, GCP and Azure. Sense coming on board I have expanded this Platform to be the first global cloud service at Pivotal that now supports: Customer Engagements/POCs, Product Development, CI/CD (Jenkins, Confluence, Concourse), Dogfooding, Enterprise Applications, Big Data (Hawk, PHD, Hadoop) and everyday Cloud Capacity.
Cloud Operations And Infrastructure - Sr Staff Program Manager
Cloud Operations Program Manager: As the Cloud Program Manager I directed the formulation, implementation and management of cloud infrastructure operations globally for VMware. To this purpose, I lead a team of Architects and Engineers with the directive of transforming IT's service delivery models into Cloud metaphors. To facilitate this transformation I work closely with our Product Management and Software Development teams to translate business requirements into cloud constructs, platform functionality and infrastructure architecture. Lastly, I proactively work with our R&D community to take the experience gained from these scaled deployments and integrate them into the evolution and betterment of our entire product portfolio. During my time as the Cloud Program Manager, I directed the growth and proliferation of VMware's private Cloud platform from its humble beginnings to be over 60,000 servers globally.Key Responsibilities:Vision and Strategic Development of Operations Process, Procedures, Budget and Staffing24x7x365 Global Infrastructure Operations Support in with Data Centers in NASA, APJ and EMEALarge Scale Cloud and Distributed Computing Platforms (UCS, HP, EMC, NetApp, Nexus, Juniper, F5)NOC Operations (LAN, MAN, WAN, DNS, DHCP, vLAN, vXLAN, MPLS)Converged Infrastructure (White Box) Advancement (OCP, SuperMicro, Intel Arc, Quanta, Arista)Service Level Optimization (SLAs, KPIs, CSFs, ITGS)Cloud Business Development and Service Catalog EnhancementOperations Automation: Puppet, vCO, Chef, Cisco Prime
It Security Program Manager:
As the IT security Program manager I developed and implemented the programs that protected and secured VMware’s core IP, critical infrastructure and high value assets. In this role I work closely with the CIO, CISO and executive management teams to translate high-level business objectives, regulatory controls and security risks into actionable IT security programs. In order to effectively coordinate this program portfolio I apply a controllership framework and governance that ensures the global orchestration of effort to deliverables. The scope of these programs cover the entire spectrum of IT security including: Intrusion detection/prevention (APT), threat propagation, network resiliency (DDoS), forensic analysis, OS hardening, access control, authentication management, identity management, DLP, RSA, and infrastructure security. In concert with these programs I also work with our end user community to educate them on IT security best practices and policy mandates.
Senior Technical Project Manager
As the Senior Project Manager within the professional services organization I orchestrated, managed and maintained all aspects of the project life cycle. In this role I displayed a consistent track record of successfully managing large scale global IT initiatives with a emphasis on improving quality, efficiency and customer satisfaction. To help facilitate this, this I utilized a multitude of project management methodologies (PMI, Prince 2, Agile) and process improvement principles. I implemented a project quality architecture by forming a cross functional global steering committee with the express purpose of implementing process improvement across client organizations. Maintained project adherence to corporate, federal and security regulatory standards (e.g. SOX, HIPAA, ISO, PCI DSS and COBIT). I independently managed projects with budgets of $67,000 - $3.5 million and staffing of 3 to 40 engineers with a strategic focus on financial management and project run rate reduction.I was also a lead contributor in the development, maturity, and auditing of PMO processes utilized within the Professional Services Organization.Industries: Fortune 500, Health Care (Hospitals and Insurance), Department of Defense, Education, Technology, Retail, Local and State Government and Financial
