Director, Marine Conservation
Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts
In my role as Director of Marine Conservation, I championed political, media, and advocacy work in the U.S., Europe, Iceland and Japan. I managed and led a global team of scientific, legal, and communications staff, grantees, and contractors working to protect whales and other marine species from priority threats. I developed multi-year communication strategies and planned and implemented compelling advocacy campaigns, stakeholder partnerships, and habitat protection projects.I was the marine conservation spokesperson actively interfacing with global stakeholders, government, media, NGO and public audiences. One of the projects I am most proud of is serving as an NGO lead who helped secure the landmark ruling ending Japan's Antarctic Whaling. Working with international governments, lawyers and key government officials and politicians we established the basis for the unprecedented case at the International Court of Justice. Combined with important work inside Japan, these efforts led to the cessation of Japan's high-seas whaling activities, a major conservation milestone. See more about it in my press conference at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tVSSfn5enEAnother project I am extremely proud of is my involvement in the creation, funding solicitation, and partnership development to produce the double-Emmy-award winning documentary Sonic Sea, which helped accelerate international policy on ocean noise pollution. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Zfx2YgI2hsI also helped design and implement the successful, large-scale campaign to protect Laguna San Ignacio, the last pristine birthing lagoon of the Eastern Pacific Gray Whale, from industrial development.
