About Patrick R. Johnson
My work centers on finding a pathway toward more just and equitable futures in journalism and media practice by positioning journalism not as part of the problem but as a solution to democracy's problems (e.g., trust, mis- and disinformation, and news avoidance). In particular, I study the intersection of news literacy, education, and journalism practice to strengthen communal trust, local news, and marginalized press functions. The crux of my scholarly life is education and pedagogy, both in the traditional sense (as a teacher and researcher) and in the professional community (examining journalism practice and professionalization). However, the way I interrogate education questions is non-traditional. I come at my questions through discussions and critical analysis of the people, places, things, and ideas that education and professionalization teach and train future media professionals not to be like: the deviants. I, therefore, focus my time on what lies outside or at the margins of the bright-line boundaries journalism and media choose to build. I see journalism studies not as a place to produce knowledge but as a way to find how knowledge can be the gateway to more solutions in journalism's future. My research is meant to be practical, providing tangible solutions for the challenges faced in journalism and media practice. This is especially true of my model of News Literate Journalism, which provides a pathway to build a more critical news ecosystem where journalists (especially those within the local levels and marginalized communities) are more literate about the institution they work within and the communities they serve. I have a curriculum that speaks to this as well.My work with graduate students and LGBTQ advocacy are also core to my mission and identity. I am a diligent and tireless champion of better systems that promote mental health, prioritize thoughtful relationship-centered experiences, and position grace and gratitude as avenues of growth and success. In my daily interactions and practice, one can expect this to be a North Star and a desired focus of my appointment. I am an award-winning scholar with publications published, accepted, and in revision in top journals (i.e., Digital Journalism, Media and Communication, Journal of Media Literacy Education) across journalism and media studies. My accomplishments and publications can be found on my personal website: prjohnson.org.
