As the Director of Front-End development on the Genome team, I’m responsible for the the evolution of the platform. With Genome being a 15+ year platform, there are unique challenges to ensure its stable and also current with today’s web technologies. I work closely with the Back-End team to ensure that communication between the front and back end is present and reliable.Over the years, my role has evolved into a tech leader on the team. I am involved in a lot of the initial planning state of any new features we build. I also have worked closely with the rest of the developers on the team to ensure a consistent process from task definition to dev to testing to launch. This process ensures we build and launch stable code.

As a Front-End architect on the Genome team at Klick, I am responsible for helping lead the way for the direction of the FE platform. During this time, we fully rebuilt many of our internal tools using new languages/libraries. Our primary focus began with a framework called Mithril. Over the years, that slowly moved into using web components. This was a revolutionary step for our platform.

Course Guru was a project started back in Web Development class at University of Guelph in Fall 2011. The website started out as WebRevisor and focused on courses only at University of Guelph. After a successful year, WebRevisor got renamed to Course Guru and was expanded to 11 universities across Ontario in August 2012. The website has gone through 3 re-designs and is in the process of being re-designed for the 4th time. Course Guru allows students from 11 universities across Ontario to make comments on the courses they have taken. This website is a great tool for students to learn from other students about the courses they are interested in taking.

My journey at Target Directories started off as a co-op student in the summer of 2011. I began working mostly with WordPress and converting a regular website into the WordPress theme using all the functionalities of WordPress. One year later, after graduating from University of Guelph, I began working full-time at Target Directories. I have been involved in projects such as TheCampLamp and RetirementHomes.com. TheCampLamp is a product that offers camps the freedom of being able to dynamically add and remove information from their website. The site is built off WordPress and currently has numerous camps on the system. RetirementHomes.com is undergoing a complete overhaul, both functionally and visually. I am going to be one of the main developers working on this project which will take 6 months or so to complete. So far at Target Directories, I have done everything from building computers for other employees to helping send out weekly newsletters. I provide technical support at Target.

Starting when I was 19 years old, I began working in the bunkers. The bottom of the totem pole. I slowly worked my was up that year to cutting some greens and the area immediately around the green, the collars. Being trusted with the responsibility of ensuring that the greens were cut to the standards of the course gave me the confidence to approach my manager and ask to learn more about other machines. Over the next year, the management changed and I was immediately recognized as one of the people that could be useful in some of the important jobs like cutting the rough and setting up the course (this includes choosing where to place the pins and the tee blocks). I worked on setting the course for the next two years part time and I gained trust in my managers and other co-workers at the course. I alternated between setting the course and running some of the large machinery, such as rough movers, greens mowers, large workman vehicles.

As a co-op student, I worked closely with my manager on some projects varying from simple tools to help our team perform tasks more efficiently to some projects that reflect some major events at RBC, such as the Christmas auction. The first tool that I worked on was a simple tool that allowed our developers to create an automated email that would be sent to the necessary people in RBC. The major project that I worked on and was in charge of was the creation of an internal request store where employees can request certain items (such as a computer or access to a service) and the tool would recognize the people it needs to contact in order to provide approval for the item. This involved creating a store similar looking to the Google Chrome Store and also creating an easy to use admin area where managers can create items to be requested. The system integrated with the RBC LDAP system which allowed for a more personal experience for the user. When the user was logged into their RBC computer, the site would automatically retrieve their login information, such as their name, and it would integrate it into features for the system.
