The ICT department was in need of a different management structure so there were additional roles defined to address alignment between ICT and the user organization of Deltares. Therefore I got the role of Service Owner for Data Facilities. This means in practice that I am the spokesman when the organization have needs in respect to data storage and service levels. This is very broad and also includes cloud storage and other topics as backup and recovery in cooperation with ICT. In this role I make sure demands are met and keep the lookout for further developments at Deltares and storage technology advances. As Deltares develops its knowledge and software managed by "moonshots" and "epics" towards a digital transformation of the organization, research data is a crucial part of becoming a digital transformed knowledge institute for applied science. From the diverse experimental facilities we have on our campus a lot of measurements and other data (like high-res video and photographic material) which must be handled with the best quality assurance. Creating FAIR data is one of the challenges we face within these types of data. An additional role I fill in is of Product Owner of FAIR data in the experimental facilities. Working together with very smart and highly educated people that have a very distinct way of working and operating in a scientific environment is demanding, but very rewarding when successful. One of my tasks is to maintain the team with members from different backgrounds and create the product FairDataFinder and other tools around this.

To enable Deltares developing knowledge and applying this against global challenges it faces a lot of questions on how to operate the business to succeed. My role is to advise and develop a resilient IT-architecture that answers questions that arise in the IT-department aiding the business. Align the IT-department to the business and making sure new developments are supported by a strong foundation of IT assets. Thereby making it possible to innovate without losing sight of availability and integrity of (scientific) data and work.Describing, with the help of architectural models, the changes that are needed to fulfill the business needs. Asses and monitor the pace of changes and create high level insights into the needed capabilities. Mainly advising the IT-staff so informed decisions can be made according to available resources and funding with the help of different graphical views. Prioritize the work and keeping focus on our mission.All initiatives should contribute to the strategy of Deltares within our scientific and business principles to "Enable Delta Life".

Delft

Design and development of infrastructure and systems aiding researchers. Main field of expertise is Linux and storagedevices. Managing the computational cluster consisting of 150 nodes and NFS storage on FreeBSD next to the ESX cluster and Netapp storagedevices.Designed a new ESX cluster and wrote a project plan to consolidate and merge workloads and management tasks.Started a project to migrate the very distributed single storage boxes to a software storage platform across the infrastructure that is resilient and fast. Migrated the computational cluster to a new Linux platform according to a new working model and migrated the cluster to new hardware and changed system administration tasks.

Utrecht

Responsible for maintaining, operating and planning the SAN and Storage environment. Environment consist mainly of HP products: HP EVA, HP VLS, HP DataProtector and HP SAN switches.Senior level UNIX system administration HP-UX on HP Itanium platform. Planned the acquisition of a new storageplatform to accomodate more storage capacity as well as a better integration with networked fileshares and database systems.

Hired by AMC Amsterdam:Improved workprocesses for Infrastructure Services department. Created a workflow and intake procedure. Result is to increase efficienty and decrease time to development of services. Implemented the open source source version control system Subversion.Experience with Nagios and in particular GroundWork. designed and implemented GroundWork monitoring for AMC Amsterdam. This site has 1000+ servers (virtual and physical) and over 3000 services. Developed new plugins for Nagios/GW in Perl.Enrolling of Redhat Enterprise Linux servers in VMware virtualisation clusters as well as installing on physical HP DL3xx servers. Configuring RHEL 5 servers from test to production.Feasibility study for using a MySQL cluster environment at AMC. Combined with a loadbalancing concept. Responsible for the administration, management and availability of 40 Tb of data on NetApp hardware for the internal datacenter. In this datacenter we hosted our client sites and our own centralised data.Consultancy regarding storage issues to clients and the internal datacenter at DataBalk. Designing infrastructures for new clients and creating pre-sales quotations as well as implementation plans.

Starting a role as network associate. The company needed a network associate. Developed the needed skills in LAN switching network, VLAN tagging and routing protocols to maintain minimal viable service.
