Engineers play a pivotal role in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges. While brilliant individual skill is crucial, it’s not enough. The complexity and uncertainty that characterize the world today drives the need for excellence at the team level, and excellent engineering teams start with excellent engineering leaders.Despite engineers being some of the best and brightest people around, it can be incredibly tough for many engineers to make the transition to leadership. Most of us enter into leadership roles without any kind of preparation. The result? Stress and burnout on the part of the leader, and poor performance and frustration on the part of the team.I started The Engineering & Leadership Project to fix all that.Our goal is to help engineers build the skills they need to transition seemlessly into leadership and management roles, and to support their development once they’re established. We offer a podcast, articles, courses, training, coaching, and consulting to help individuals and organizations level up their technical leadership and management skills.

As the Director of Marketing and Social Outreach of the International Monorail Association, I am responsible for developing and executing strategies for attracting and retaining members for the association, as well as promoting the association externally.The International Monorail Association is a members association of registered companies whose mission is to organize the global monorail sector, promote the application of monorail, publish information, and establish performance standards for monorail mass transit.

Responsible for the overall management and development of Bombardier's INNOVIA Monorail systems worldwide.In this role, I am responsible for managing a multi-million dollar portfolio of projects to help improve and develop our monorail systems. I am also responsible for defining the requirements of current and future competitive monorail products based on market trends. I also support engineering and other internal stakeholders to establish a competitive product strategy and to develop and maintain a multi-generational product road map. Finally, I also work with marketing and sales to market and promote Bombardier's monorail systems and with our bids teams to help secure new projects.Highlights:- Successfully launched a $1 million monorail car refurbishment project and turned around a troubled $2.9 million monorail switch development project while introducing lean and visual project management techniques.- Through leading strategic R&D projects, realized a recurring cost reduction of $3.6 million for our monorail product in 2015.

As an electrical integrator/ lead engineer with the Systems Division's Vehicle Engineering group, I was responsible for ensuring that the various train-borne systems (propulsion, brakes, train controls, etc.) work together as a cohesive whole for new rapid transit rail vehicles. My work involves managing electrical schematics for new vehicle design, systems integration and design, providing engineering support for procurement, production, and testing, and providing front-line leadership to the electrical engineering team.Highlights:- Showed strong analytical and technical skills through taking responsibility for the overall design and integration of complex electrical systems on the INNOVIA Metro 300 vehicle contract in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.- Provided direct support to the Project Engineering Manager in the management, coordination, and control of an international engineering team of greater than 30 members for the successful and timely completion of engineering tasks on a project worth approximately $150 million.- Played an important role in client relationship management and was a client-facing member of Bombardier’s project team.- Developed new web-based project management tools and processes to better organize and coordinate technical information for the engineering team, allowing for greater efficiency and visibility of project team progress for stakeholders, which resulted in a division- and group-level innovation award nominations.- Awarded the 2013 Dedication and Commitment to Excellence Bombardier Transportation Engineering award.

- Was the technical lead in for Utilities Kingston’s campaign to implement the Ontario Power Authority’s Energy Retrofit Funding Program. This program offered commercial property owners funding to retrofit their buildings with energy saving equipment so as to reduce both energy consumption and demand. - Met with individual commercial property owners throughout Kingston to explain the funding program, conduct assessments of their properties and proposed improvements for eligibility, and assist in the completion of funding applications. - Conducted detailed technical analyses in order to validate the energy savings of proposed projects and to recommend additional measures that could be taken to save additional energy or quality for additional funds.- Represented and presented on behalf of Utilities Kingston in community events aimed at promoting energy efficiency and the energy retrofit program.

• Was selected for, and graduated from a one-year new graduate program. There, I gained an understanding for the consulting industry and developed leadership, business, and technical skills through project work in eight Canadian cities and in five different technical practices. • Provided site services, tracked construction progress, coordinated documents, and assisted the project manager in a one year, $7.56 million arena construction project. • Co-led an investigation of energy management opportunities in the street lighting system for a municipality of 120,000 residents, and identified an estimated $2 million in possible operational and energy savings over a 20-year horizon.• Created an Excel-based payment reconciliation tool and training manual for a landfill gas power-generating facility to be able to verify the payments received for the sale of power under a Feed-in Tariff contract with the Ontario Power Authority.• Completed site investigations and computer modeling in Paladin DesignBase for arc flash, power flow, and protective device coordination studies for three large water treatment and pumping facilities.• Showed adaptability by filling design and field roles in both the Building and Facilities Design practice and the Municipal Engineering practice.• Developed an understanding of consulting by participating on two Client Relationship Management teams where I developed project proposals, completed client research, and was a direct client contact for projects.

• Conducted laboratory tests to validate the effects of alternate LED driving schemes and developed a method for improving our roadway light’s luminous efficacy by 15%. • Traveled as a company representative to establish a relationship with a lighting testing facility, and to acquire knowledge pertaining to creating an internal testing facility. • Supported business and technical staff in international lighting and safety standards research, and in the development of marketing material including presentations, brochures, and website material. • Trained the incoming co-op student in company policies and procedures, technology in use, and general product topology. Trained three staff members in the use of lab equipment, including an integrating sphere and associated software.

• Supported technicians in the maintenance and repair of medical imaging equipment, evaluated condition and use of ultrasound equipment and made recommendations on how better to use them.

• Wrote test set instructions, and other technical documents, so that production line operators could properly and efficiently test circuit boards to ensure quality, functionality, and specifications.• Ordered Equipment and supplies. Was in charge of selecting, pricing, and ordering equipment, including crimping tools and specialized thermal, pick-and-place labels to complete customer orders.• Placed on LED Streetlight project. Was promoted to be C-Vision’s first full time employee on a $2.9 million, 2-year LED streetlight design project. I acted as a technical consultant reporting directly to the VP of Innovation and Special Projects, and the President of the company. I advised on issues pertaining to LEDs, LED manufacturers, and LED design considerations and constraints.
