Since the advent of Pop Art, Artists like Roy Lichtenstein have set the benchmark for the kind of work I like to do. They lifted Comics into the world of Contemporary Art exposing an artistic and critical look at the consumer society.Human civilization has become The Consumer Society, and produced a new breed of Consumer Citizens who exist to buy their way to happiness. Media are just part of a mounting tide of ever-present persuasion disseminating an overriding, oppressive truth: happiness is youth, beauty and power. Comics create a credible world with a few line strokes: space is suggested by perspective and short cuts, sound by onomatopoeias and captions, motion by the page layout, time by the succession of frames. Today the grammar of comics is part of our visual language, it’s an integral part of our way to decode visual communication, todays Cinema editing as been influenced by it. We are familiar with their iconic characters, their world of good set against evil. Their simplicity invites easy, voluptuous identification. A major theme of my work is the Judeo-Christian bipolar values of good and evil. I explore the peculiar ability of comics to synthesize and caricature reality, and in so doing reveal stereotypes, which brings to light the arch messages that our society forwards to us. This allows me to playfully accentuate a contrast between style and subject matter, manipulate stereotypes and the symbolism of color, and employ narrative shortcuts. Like a charade, a play on images, I create links between a platinum gorgeous blond, an angel, gold and power, the Catholic Church and violence. Like the comics character Captain America, Michael the archangel strikes from the sky, highlighting in that case the historic link that religion maintains with war and power.
