  • Queen'S University Belfast
Research Fellow - Spire Ii Project
    Queen'S University Belfast Jul 2018 - Jun 2021
    Belfast, United Kingdom
As part of a large team, across multiple institutions and with 4 PhD students in Queen's University, we conducted research into the value of energy storage. The specific focus within Queen's was in to electrical energy storage. Research was conducted into the use of energy storage to facilitate higher renewable energy infeed, dampen power system oscillations and demonstrate the utility of novel power system services. This role involved everything from original research, presentation of results, working with utilities, power system service providers and regulators, development of new monitoring technologies and supporting PhD students.
  • Queen'S University Belfast
Research Fellow - Large Scale Storage For Network Services
    Queen'S University Belfast Oct 2015 - May 2018
    Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
This role involved research into the utility of battery energy storage, particularly on the Irish power system and with a focus on the 10 MW grid level battery installed at the time at AES (now EPUK) Kilroot Power Station. QUB operated as an independent partner between SONI/EirGrid as the TSO Utility, AES as a power system service provider and the electrical regulator. Research was conducted on grid models informed by real world measurements from the Irish power system, including measurements of the AERS battery. Some of the PMU devices used to monitor the power system and the AES battery were provided by QUB and developed and tested by me. The performance of the battery was assessed, along with the value of potential services that it could provide.
  • Queen'S University Belfast
Phd Electrical Engineering - Pmu Based Wide-Area Monitoring, Protection And Control
    Queen'S University Belfast Sep 2011 - Aug 2015
    Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
Worked with real power system data, from phasor measurement units (PMUs) and SCADA, and power system simulations to demonstrate the utility of wide-area monitoring. Developed an optimisation methodology and cost function that was implemented to assess and optimise power system models over a wide range of system conditions, contingencies, and renewable energy in feeds. As part of this work, I gained familiarity with power system modelling software, helped develop the OpenPMU project and developed a testing method for PMUs.
