When we negotiate contracts with prospective counterparties, I analyze their redline versions and update the term sheets that serve as control documents and reference guides throughout our documentation process. On the regulatory side, I draft testimony for PSE executives for use in rate cases and other critical proceedings.To help our team work more efficiently and productively, I led an effort to streamline our approach to drafting reports to the Board of Directors. In the same spirit, I created and maintain a house style guide that helps our team quickly create cleaner, more confidently worded copy.At present, this is a contract position whose term is scheduled to end in Q4 2024.

My job changed significantly over the course of my time at Pearson, first out of necessity and later because my department benefited in ways it hadn’t foreseen when I was hired. With a title change came an additional set of responsibilities. I still edited proposal text and maintained our boilerplate, but I also developed new ways of assessing my department’s performance and its contributions to the corporation.Each month, I took a close look at our performance and assessed it against the historical record I had researched and documented. I also studied the internal and macroeconomic factors that affected the volume of work we submitted and the contract agreements we won, along with developments in the education sector that played a role in our fortunes. Drawing on this analysis, I calculated KPIs and sometimes created relevant, insightful ways to quantify my department’s contributions to Pearson’s fortunes.I compiled this work into monthly, quarterly, and annual reports with the help of my boss and his boss, and distributed them directly to my division’s leaders, including its president.Things went so well that when my family had a chance to move to Grand Cayman, everyone in a position to say no gave me their blessing. Which turned out to be good as long as Pearson intended to retain my division. When they put Pearson K12 Learning on the market, one buyer stipulated that no remote employees be included in the deal. Pearson offered me a chance to keep my job, but my kids were young and happy at school, and my partner enjoyed her job.

Writing marketing content is a fun challenge for me. Writing marketing content that’s also legally binding, for a department that contested eight figures worth of business a year, was a high-stakes blast.I began as a proposal writer in a division that served Pearson’s educational testing and K-12 curriculum divisions. There, I wrote proposals and related documents in response to RFPs, RFIs, and RFQs issued by federal and state agencies and local school districts. Collaborating with subject matter experts, sales personnel, and project managers reminded me of my collaborations with professors in my previous life as an academic librarian.When a colleague’s leave of absence became indefinite, I took on an additional role as the department’s content analyst. In this capacity, I took a nascent database of boilerplate text and grew it into a significant resource that helped my team raise its win rate from 50% to 61% and its overall production volume by 71%...all without changing our staffing levels. The work I did toward discovering, reporting, visualizing, and updating key statistics reflecting Pearson’s business performance helped colleagues in departments beyond ours.

When a friend and former colleague mentioned that Zayed University was looking for a consultant, I was all ears. The university's library had invested in a major expansion of its system software, and needed someone to configure it, document its use, and train library staff. And so, buoyed by the performance of my meager stock portfolio through the summer of 2008, that's what I did. The consultancy was mutually rewarding, even if the global economy argued that my timing was terrible. When I returned to the US, I worked in what had been a two-man business owned by a relative. I put in a lot of hard hours in a warehouse and learned on the fly how to drive a heavily loaded truck across city streets, suburban byways, and country roads. We grossed more than $1 million.

At Neal-Schuman, a professional publisher whose list focused on librarianship and information science, I identified and promoted new book projects, helped authors develop their manuscripts, built and supported the company’s digital infrastructure, wrote marketing materials, and represented the company at trade shows. Among the books I championed, developed, and edited is _Metadata_ by Marcia Lei Zeng and Jian Qin, now in its third edition. For each of the three to five potential projects I advanced each month, I created profit/loss projections, performed SWOT analyses and competitive assessments, and outlined marketing strategies, effectively creating book proposals for our authors (most of whom were experienced professionals but first-time writers). To help focus Neal-Schuman’s acquisitions strategy, I developed a method for accurately estimating competing publishers’ sales of books similar to ours. This research helped me identify our list’s strengths and weaknesses, and those of our competitors, along with relatively underserved subject areas representing growth opportunities. I produced a matrix of strategically targeted acquisitions recommendations based on this research.It’s possible to be a good fit for an industry, but not for a particular company. Neal-Schuman underwent significant changes while I was there, and I stepped aside for a genuinely fascinating opportunity.
