Engineering Porfolio: www.paul-cairns.comI am a passionate and dynamic Mechanical and prototyping Engineer (10+ years) dedicated to turning peoples' ideas into products. In today's world, products are becoming more and more multi-disciplinary requiring a wholesome engieering approach. With my experience in Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, as well as electro-mechanical and programming know-how, I can tackle any engineering problem thrown my way. From CAD design, simulation (FEA), Material Selection, Electronics Design, Construction, Testing, and Specification, I am the right person to prepare your product for commercialization.I started my carreer as a Research Engineer (Mechanical) for Natural Resources Canada where I worked with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and researchers to design and construct a high-pressure and temperature combustor pilot plant for carbon capture technology. This project required extensive design, prep, simulation, and engineering to construct. I was then offered a position as Executive Director of a Green Energy business Incubator where I championed green energy projects and advised greentech startups. When I turned 30, I decided I needed to take a year to explore the world. I travelled to Mexico and Africa, and spent a few months volunteering to repair homes in Puerto Rico as part of the huricane recovery program at All-Hands and Hearts. This experience inspired me to apply to apply to Engineers Without Borders where I was connected with Energy Generation in Togo. At Energy Generation I became Technical Director and Prinicipal Engineer where I assisted entrepreneurs in turning their ideas into Minimum VIable Products. I led the construction and commissioning of a Fablab that became the first registered Fab Academy Node in West Africa, designed and built over 50 prototypes, and really flexed my multi-disciplinary engineering muscle. Some of my proudest achievements include: - My team being awarded a departmental award at NRCan for outstanding achievement - Publishing a research paper on the topic of Oxy-fired combustion - Working with my team to get our DCSG patent awarded - Awarded the Building a Sustainable Future Award as Executive Director of SmartNet Alliance (SmartNet Coalition) - Becoming the first registered Fab Academy Node in West Africa - Being on the team at Energy Generation when we won the Ashden Award - Working with entrepreneurs and MTU to publish research on making paving stones from waste plastic - Winning a bounty at the ETH Hackathon
