Paul Harney is a Principal and Senior Project Architect in Perkins & Will’s Washington, DC office, with over 30 years of experience, specializing in higher education and science + technology. Paul has dedicated his entire career at Perkins & Will to STEM-driven projects, including teaching and research facilities for life sciences, physical sciences, and engineering for colleges and universities across the country. Paul is also an emerging leader in career and technical education facilities that bridge the gap between technical skill development and the needs of a rapidly evolving economy. One of Paul’s primary interests is in helping higher education institutions find new pathways for innovation via collaborations with industry, and to make richer connections between learning, research, and real-world applications and experience. Paul has served as lead programmer, planner, project architect, project manager, and principal-in-charge for significant higher education projects across the United States. These include Exploratory Hall and Horizon Hall at George Mason University; Upson Hall (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) at Cornell University; the Center for Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Nursing at Bowie State University; the Mars G. Fontana Labs (Biomedical and Materials Engineering) at the Ohio State University; Gilmer Hall and the Chemistry Building at the University of Virginia; the Center for Advanced Manufacturing at Ozarks Technical Community College; and the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing ("CCAM"). In construction are the College of Health Professions at Towson University; the Communication Arts and Humanities Building at Bowie State University; the Missouri Protoplex (Advanced Manufacturing Research Center) at the Missouri University for Science & Technology; and Mitchell Hall at Virginia Tech, which will be VT's flagship engineering building and the largest academic/research building ever constructed on its Blacksburg campus.

As a recipient of a prestigious Luce Scholarship in 1990, Paul's first year at Maki & Associates was sponsored by the Henry Luce Foundation as part of its ongoing initiative to connect emerging American leaders, representing a variety of academic and professional disciplines, with meaningful experience living and working in Asia. Paul remained at Maki & Associates for another 2 years as a regular employee. During these years, Paul was a key contributor to the design of the Kirishima International Music Festival Center, as well as to significant competition projects around the world, including the Kyoto Concert Hall, Berlin Olympic Stadium Complex, and the Salzburg Kongresshaus.
