As Group Head Mining, reporting to Technical Director, I was responsible for establishing a high performing corporate mining technical team to support all business units and operations across the group. The key success factor was to realise the potential value of the assets and to influence key personnel to achieve the step changes required to make Anglo American a world leader in the resources industry.During my tenure I was able to visit 25 operations across the group and instigate a full review, from a mining engineering perspective, of the operational and business strategies for Copper, Platinum, Iron Ore Brazil, and Kumba Iron. Coal and Diamond reviews were in progress. This was carried in a systematic manner to ensure the appropriate priorities to maximize the potential value of the group’s commercial profile. Renison Tin Mine, West Coast, Tasmania

Responsible for underground operation to ensure that mine safety, production and development targets were achieved. In doing this, increased production from 0.5 Mtpa to 0.7 Mtpa and improved safety culture by increasing the number of LTI free days from 19 days to more than 500 days.

Mt Lyell Copper Mine, West Coast, Tasmania

Responsible for the Technical Services Department for the underground operation. Major focus was to change the mine from predominantly truck haulage to a shaft hoisting operation.

Renison Tin Mine, West Coast, Tasmania

Designed and implemented the first long hole bench stopes, with rock fill, at Renison tin mine. Appointed Underground manager - increased production by 30%, reduced operational costs by 50%, substantially improved safety and work practices in a highly unionized environment.
