I worked full time as a photographer from 1986 until 2003 (when I took on the paid work at Redeye), and part-time after that. Like many photographers I do a range of work; a lot of it comes under the heading of editorial and photojournalism. My subject matter is everyday life, work, news, events, people and the arts. I work for a number of lovely progressive clients including magazines, charities, trade unions, housing associations, and local councils. I am an irregular contributor to one of the very first ever online photo libraries, Report Digital.

I regularly give lectures at universities and colleges, talking about the business side of photography, including Manchester Met, Salford, UCLan, Sheffield Hallam, Chester, Bolton, Blackpool College, Hugh Baird, Cumbria, Glyndwr, Bradford and Falmouth.

I set up, chaired, and directed this organisation which helps protect and share the UK’s diverse photographic collections and archives for everyone, delivering events, opportunities, research, information and advocacy.

I helped set up Redeye in the late 1990s and became its founding Director in 2003. Redeye is regarded as one of the most successful support organisations in UK photography. It has helped hundreds of photographers in every different genre to develop their photographic work and careers through a programme of events, courses, professional development, commissions, collaborations, business advice and information. It is part-funded by Arts Council England as a Sector Support Organisation.

I was the founder and first chair of what is now the Look Photo Biennial, taking place in Manchester and Liverpool, UK

I helped set up and worked in this small photojournalism agency with two other photographers in the North of England 1980s and 90s. I still have the trading name, but when my colleagues moved away from this type of photography, I effectively then worked fully as an independent freelance photographer.
