About Paul Jeffery

Science has always been a passion of mine, but it was only during my undergrad that I began to hone in on what exactly drew me to study it. That draw was tied to the intrinsic goal, as I see it, of science: to understand the world through data. Whether in the form of collecting, modeling or analyzing data, I noticed that data analysis is pervasive to science, and the more I worked in various lab groups, the more I realized that this analytical process, for the purpose of understanding and making predictions, is the root of my passion for science. Having distilled my passion to its core, I now hope to leverage my skills as a physicist to transition into the world of data analysis and data science.I hold a bachelors degree in Physics, Biology for Health Science, and Chemistry from the University of Toronto, and a doctorate in Atmospheric Physics, with a collaborative specialist in Environmental Studies, from the University of Toronto. During my undergrad I was a member of the Barzda Biophysics Lab Group at the University of Toronto, where my projects included a power monitoring system for use with a laser microscopy system, and using second and third harmonic generation techniques to characterize collagen differences in cancerous and non-cancerous lung tissue. I joined the Walker Lab Group at the University of Toronto in 2015, focusing initially on analysis of stratospheric water vapour measured by the ACE-FTS satellite instrument. This analysis eventually turned to focus on the mesosphere, with emphasis on quantifying the impact of effect various drivers. In 2016 I took over the operation of the PARIS-IR portable spectrometer and operated it out of the CANDAC Laboratory, in Eureka, Nunavut, during the 2017 Canadian Arctic ACE/OSIRIS Validation Campaign. My work with PARIS-IR includes the production of gas profiles, including the development of new methods of water vapour profiles, comparison of these to other instruments for validation, and analysis of trends in the trace gas data. During 2018 I operated the York SPS instrument during that year's Arctic validation campaign. During my doctorate I also worked on the development of climatologies for ozone and water vapour in the UTLS using multiple instrumental and model datasets. Since graduating, I've become a Research Associate at the University of Toronto, splitting my time between the Drummond and Walker lab groups. In this role, I monitor and command the MOPITT instrument on NASA's Terra satellite, and work on data validation for the MAESTRO instrument on the CSA's SCISAT satellite.

During my doctorate, my research focused on three projects. The first was based on analysis of water vapour as measured by the ACE-FTS satellite instrument. This work initially focused on the stratosphere but later transitioned to the mesosphere, with an emphasis on the driving forces behind atmospheric moisture. Specifically various data analysis techniques were employed to portion out the influence of factors including the solar cycle, ENSO, and QBO, to gauge the behavior of mesospheric water vapour.The second project was based on the operations of a portable spectrometer, PARIS-IR, in the Canadian high Arctic. This involved not only the operation and maintenance of the instruemnt, but the development of retrievals for trace gas profiles from solar spectral measurements, the production of trace gas profiles for nine different species from these retrieval methods, the comparison and validation of other instrument datasets with the one developed from PARIS-IR, and analysis of the time series trace gases. Operations in the Arctic were done as part of the Canadian Arctic ACE/OSIRIS validation campaigns (https://eureka.physics.utoronto.ca/ ), for which I was the operator of PARIS-IR (2017) and the York SPS instrument (2018). I was also the webmaster for the listed site over these two years.My last focus was on the development of climatologies for ozone and water vapour in the Upper Troposphere-Lower Stratosphere, using multiple instrumental and model datasets. This included a thorough analysis of coordinate systems done to minimize variability and produce the clearest results, and supported the SPARC Data Initiative's OCTAV-UTLS activity. As a part of this project not only were the climatologies developed for each dataset, but in-depth comparisons of the datasets and trends derived from each were also performed. These projects were supported by the Canadian Space Agency, Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Northern Scientific Training Program, and NSERC.
