Contracted by this newly established organisation to build a Finance function to manage the £multi-m donated and distributed for those impacted by COVID-19. Built a small team of highly competent volunteers to administer and monitor all the income and expenditure. Generated weekly financial KPI Reports for the management team and trustees to closely monitor income and expenditure for the appeal. Established a positive relationship with the audit partner to ensure best practice was followed with financial and grant management. Liaised with key partners on financial and contract matters to ensure high functioning partnerships and smooth running of programmes. Managed the Risk Register. Managed paralegal staff to ensure grant agreements were in the best interests of organisation and its ability to achieve objectives.◼️Rapidly implemented Xero accounting system, optimising its potential to automate processing and authorising of transactions.◼️Built a streamlined and robust in-house Finance function from scratch at the start of the Coronavirus Appeal, raising and distributing £90m in 6 months.◼️Transitioned to a fully outsourced finance function as volunteers returned to work from furlough with support from a highly competent, reputable back office Finance team.

Managed a team of 5 to provide a high-quality, good-value service and encouraged them to play a supportive business partner role with colleagues. Was part of the SMT that oversaw strategy, operational planning and organisational change. Led on budget setting, management accounts, reforecasting and other financial reporting. Prepared statutory accounts in Charities SORP format and held the relationship with Auditors and other statutory bodies. Led the Finance and IT functions at this £3m turnover international development charity with a team of 24, working directly with partner organisations to run education programmes in 4 post-conflict countries. Played a lead role in drawing up a 3-year strategic plan for CiC, including chairing meetings with employees and Trustees to plan the strategic approach for the development of finance systems across the organisation and with partner organisations.◼️Awarded 2012 ICAEW Charity Award (for the £1-£5m category) for Financial Statements and Annual Report that ‘conveyed its mission and achievements to good effect, bringing the charity to life’.◼️Successfully embedded a strong culture of financial awareness and monitoring throughout the organisation through relationship building, employee training and regular reviews. Commended by KPMG / DFID in their Due Diligence Assessment, saying ‘the grantee places great importance on its programme staff being involved in financial monitoring’.◼️Established a strong overseas financial controls framework for managing the relationships with overseas offices and partner organisations. Commended as a ‘clear, simple and practical set of expectations’ by KPMG / DFID in their Due Diligence Assessment of grant funding. ◼️Interim CEO for a 6-month period, during which time 2 new grant contracts were won and maintained a stable, focussed team of staff ready for the new CEO to take forward.
