I am a professor in Human Factors and creator of the Centre for Human Factors and Sociotechnical Systems at the University of the Sunshine Coast. I have almost 25 years’ experience of applied Human Factors and safety science research in areas such as transport, defence, sport and outdoor recreation, healthcare, workplace safety, and disaster response. I have authored 22 books, over 300 peer reviewed journal articles, and have held prestigious fellowships from the National Health and Medical Research Council and Australian Research Council. In 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 The Australian analysis of League of Scholars data and Google Scholar data found that that I am the top Australian researcher in the field of quality and reliability. The recent Stanford University World’s top scientists study also placed me within the world’s top 2% of scientists.My current research interests are focused on the use of Human Factors and Systems thinking to optimise the design, implementation, and use of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence. More broadly my research focuses on the use of Human Factors and Systems thinking to understand and optimise the behaviour of individuals, teams, organisations, and sociotechnical systems. Outside of academia I am a keen runner and cyclist and am extremely passionate about Human Factors, football, Manchester United, and Star Wars.
