My job at The V &A involves a varied range of responsibilities and skills.I am part of the V&A decant team and my role includes;Making bespoke boxes for museum objects. This involves assessing the safest way to re-house extremely fragile objects and finding suitable storage solutions such as;Utilising a CAD programe and Zund machine to cut out and make bespoke archival boxes.My role also involves making foam core boxes, un-framing pictures, the re-housing of photographic negatives for long term storage.I am also respondible for auditing, locating and updating inventory cataloging sytem. Most of my work is with the Archive of Art & Design and also work extensively with sculpture, furniture, rolled textiles and paintings.Aswell as the safe handling and moving of museum objects I am qualified to use a Reach Forklift truck and enjoy using this skill to move objects.

As an Art Handler at Christie’s South Kensington in the Picture Warehouse since April 2015 it has been my responsibility to assist the movement and storage of pictures to and from racking areas, photo studios and salerooms. I make regular stock checks of warehouse inventory to ensure that art works under our jurisdiction can be efficiently located and made available when necessary. It is my responsibility to lot up pictures for sales, ordering in any works from other Christie’s sites and storage facilities and ensuring the safe movement up to the saleroom. In the preparation of sales and exhibitions, I will hang the pictures and liaise with the specialist departments to ascertain the placement and layout of the pieces. At Christie’s I currently work with the Modern British and Prints specialist departments. I feel very fortunate to have been allocated these departments as I feel I have benefited greatly from the diversity and vitality of artwork consigned. Each sale I have been involved with has consisted of such varied examples of this art, including many 3D objects, all requiring the organization of plinths and cabinets. It has also been a very enjoyable necessity to organize and carry out the mount cutting and framing of many works for the Prints department. I have greatly enjoyed this aspect of my role and have been particularly successful, showing a great amount of efficiency and accuracy. There are many aspects involved in organizing a print sale. From mount cutting and temp framing, shrink wrapping and organizing unframed work into Solander Boxes as well as problem solving. I have conducted my role in a highly successful fashion and have found my time here greatly rewarding. Through assisting the sales I also have forged a very good working relationship with the Prints and Modern British departments and have become a highly valued member of the teams.
