I am a teacher, an academic administrator and also a scholar of Irish history. After completing my undergraduate education at Colgate University, I was awarded a Watson Foundation Fellowship and spent 1989-90 in Northern Ireland studying "constructive responses to the Troubles." I worked as a paralegal at Willkie Farr and Gallagher in NYC from 90-92 before beginning graduate school in British and Irish history at the University of Chicago. I studied under Emmet Larkin and Steve Pincus. I also served as a resident head (and, eventually, Assistant Housing Director) at the U of C, living alongside many wonderful students in their admirable house system. I completed my Ph. D in 1999 with distinction, and accepted an Arthur Ennis Teaching Fellowship at Villanova University. In 2001 I joined the excellent history department at UNCW. I served as undergraduate coordinator before earning tenure in 2006-7, I spent a semester in 07 teaching at Swansea University in Wales. In 2008 I became department chair, and served in that capacity (one re-election) for seven years. In 2016, I became a full professor and the dean of undergraduate studies at UNCW, In 2016 I published my second book, The Road to Home Rule: Anti-imperialism and the Irish National Movement with the University of Wisconsin Press. As undergraduate dean, I worked with faculty in stewarding UNCW's system of general education, oversee our Honors College and our University College where all students spend their freshman year, as well as assist in developing undergraduate curriculum and undergraduate academic policy and catalog. I also provided leadership for UNCW's applied learning program, which sponsors a range of applied learning microgrants and supports faculty and staff in advancing approaches to teaching and learning with transference, experience and reflection at their center. In 2021 I stepped back from administration to resume my role on the faculty and in the History department.
