I teach English as a foreign language. I do this online or in person. I teach at all levels but most of my current and recent students are/have been for IELTS and LanguageCert. I feel I am getting really good at these specialisms. I thoroughly enjoy my work.

I worked as an ESOL teacher to classes of refugees, mostly in person live classes but then Zoom classes as the pandemic tried to trash our lives. Easily the most enjoyable job that I have ever done. Only the demands of self employment and having been laid low with Covid prevented me from continuing. I plan to return to this role.

Embroiderer and designer. Official football souvenir sales. Designing embroidery for clothing for customers (personal and commercial) and own range. Computerised machine embroidering of clothing and selling it online and at markets, notably Birmingham Ragmarket. This was a great opportunity to indulge and develop my design and business skills. Also to enjoy the pros and learn from the cons of being self employed.

Secondary, 11-16, 1000 students. Biology, Chemistry, Physics at KS3. Biology to all levels at GCSE. My first teaching post - a baptism of fire. I learned a lot and so did my students.

Supervision of tissue culture laboratories. Development of tissue culture techniques. As well as the scientific and technical aspects, this was an opportunity to develop my communication skills. Presenting my experimental work to other technicians, post doctoral students, scientists, assorted medics and consultants was daunting but ultimately a great boost to my skills.

Analysis of amniocentesis samples. I enjoyed the responsibilty, with big clinical decisions hanging on the the results of my analyses but I missed the practical research and development side of laboratory work.

Culture of and carrying out genetic procedures on antibiotic producing Streptomyces bacteria. This was my chance to get paid to really indulge my interest in some cutting edge work in a totally useful field of Science.

This was my first job after school. The first venture out from my socio-economc circle. Giving demonstrations to medical students - the first step on the road to turning a shy, grunting teenager into a communicator and people person.
