Paula Fields, MSN, BSN, RN joined the School-Based Health Alliance in July 2016 to lead the School Health Services National Quality Initiative. Paula has focused her career on children’s well-being. She has a wealth of experience on building school and community partnerships to work towards student success. Paula started in the school-based health care field in the late 1990’s while working as the Director of Outpatient Programs for a WV hospital. One of her first tasks was to plan, implement and sustain an School-based health center (SBHC). Paula worked to transition this SBHC to a federally qualified health center satellite which optimized its sustainability. In 2004, Paula assisted in securing a grant and with the selection of the first paid staff for WV’s School-Based Health Assembly as well as serving as a board for many years. From there Paula joined an SBHC Technical Assistance and Training Team at Marshall University. As part of the team, she worked with SBHCs including: development of technical assistance tools and resources; training and continuing education offerings; monthly webinars; and school-based health conferences. Most recently, Paula worked at the WV Department of Education as the first state-level Community Schools Coordinator. Working with talented staff and partners, she led the work to build WV’s Community School strategy. Paula has also worked on many of the School-Based Health Alliance quality improvement initiatives, as well as serves as an SBHC consultant. She volunteered as a board of director member for a WV Federally Qualified Health Clinic for eight years. She also has a diverse background in performance improvement, administration of nonprofits, management, consulting services, training, technical assistance, teaching, risk management, intensive care, cardiac rehabilitation and infection control. Paula currently leads national SBHA consulting and technical assistance. Paula holds a Master’s Degree in Nursing Education and Administration, a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and active RN licensure.
