To strategically advise NHSE in delivery of Appraisal and its Quality Assurance:• To participate in development of policy around appraisal and its link with re-licensing• To participate in the evaluation of the GP appraisal process• To run a local appraiser support group and participate in delivering regular update training for GP appraisers• To appraise GP Appraisers within the Area and provide on-going professional support for GP appraisers• To provide guidance on content and fulfilment of PDPs • To advise on the requirements for GPs’ revalidation• To advise and train GP appraisers on the quality assurance of PDPs• To liaise with and advise PCT Clinical Governance and other Appraisal leadsTo provide the strategic lead for Education:• To identify the educational needs of GPs collectively and facilitate the provision of educational activity for GPs to meet those needs• To provide educational advice to practices and the Primary Care Trust• To support protected learning time initiatives e.g. “Time-in” and “time-out” sessions for their PCT unit• To provide educational input into appropriate learning with other cliniciansNetworking and Professional Development• To liaise with the Deanery GP Appraisal and Revalidation Adviser • To participate in Deanery meetings for GP tutors, and, as appropriate, national developments in CPD

Following current guidance issued by NHS England regarding the technical aspects of Appraisals including but not limited to the NHS England Medical Appraisal Policy; Review of supporting documentation supplied by the DoctorSupport each Doctor to review their practice over the preceding year; Agree objectives and the key elements of a Personal Development Plan, Discuss progress made by each Doctor towards revalidation, and assist with any overview required after five years for the GMC revalidation folder; Maintain confidentiality over the detail of Appraisal discussions through Attempt to build positive working relationships with the Doctor and follow up Appraisal discussions to review progress if this is indicated; Identify early warning signs that an Doctor may be struggling and agree with the Doctor how this will be dealt with, involving local support mechanisms as appropriate; Where serious deficient or dangerous practice is encountered, refer the matter to the relevant NHS England Responsible Officer (or Deputy), mindful of overriding individual professional duties in relation to the performance of colleagues.Complete the required appraisal output documentation and submit these documents using agreed channels, after consultation and agreement from the Doctor https://www.england.nhs.uk/revalidation/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2014/05/qa-med-app-doc-v5.pdf

The strategic objective is to provide leadership at a regional/place based level to ensure the development of effective primary care clinical governance systems and processes that will support the oversight, management, and support of the primary care workforce.Key role objectives:To champion, develop, foster, relationships with primary care governance leads at all levels, including ICS leads to develop systems, processes and policies that support the strategic objective.Key activities associated with the role will include:• PGLs to form a networking group for mutual support and learning, accountable to Professional Standards Delivery Group (PSDG) and hence Professional Standards Oversight Group.• supporting the developing governance model• To work with the corresponding Appraisal Lead to ensure the appropriately balanced ongoing connection and distinction between the emerging governance model and the appraisal process. To this end, it is likely preferable that a person appointed to the CGL role does not also hold the Appraisal Lead role.

Salaried GP

I manage the retainer scheme.I work to improve access to education for Sessional GPs and to support them in connection with meetings requirements of appraisal, revalidation and returning from career breaks. I have participated in a RCGP funded research project pilotting the feasibility of revalidation proposals for sessional GPs. I have also carried out research funded by the Royal benevolent fund which was published as a report titled "support for sessional GPs". This looked at existing support structures for sessional GPs and also identified factors for success for Self directed learning groups, another area of interest for me.I recently presented this at a national sessional Gp conference "The Journey Forward" where my talk "life lines" was made into a webcast which can be viewed here:http://www.bma.public-i.tv/core/portal/faq My interest in appraisal and revalidation and their feasibility for sessional GPs has lead to my contributions to several editions of the RCGP guide to revalidation, (personal acknowledgement).
