My career as a teacher and leader in literacy education and technology began at University Heights High School with Nancy Mohr and Ted Sizer and with the New York City Writing Project in the 80’s and 90’s. After teaching at University Heights for a dozen years, Principal Eric Nadelstern invited me to teach English Language Learners at International High School at LaGuardia Community College. I had been a humanities teacher for most of my career until then, and as an English teacher at IHS, I found many opportunities to work with an art teacher, math teachers, and science teachers to build collaborative, multimedia projects with students.A few years later, Principal Mark Federman invited me to re-think the technology classes at East Side Community High School with an eye toward keeping reading and writing central, even in these “studio” classes. At East-West School for International Studies with Principal Ben Sherman, I continued to learn how to effectively bring photography, e-mentoring, and social networking together with the study of literature, research, non-fiction reading. My final three years before retirement, I was an English teacher at New Directions Secondary School in the Bronx, a second-chance school for 6-12th graders. As the Education Innovator/technology liaison for the New York City Writing Project since 2000, I’ve been privileged to lead a group of teachers in using cutting-edge innovations, especially social media tools, to teach multi-literacies in the classroom. Additionally, with different colleagues over the years, I am one of the producers of Teachers Teaching Teachers, a weekly live webcast in which teachers meet online in an open professional community.I’m grateful to have been recognized as one of Tech & Learning Magazine’s “Tech Leaders of the Year” (2009). My publications include Teaching the New Writing (2009) Eds. Anne Herrington, Kevin Hodgson, and Charles Moran.
Listed skills include Educational Technology, Curriculum Design, Classroom, Literacy, and 46 others.
