PAUL L. CARR is the writer, producer and co-director of Busted City, which he converted from a stage play into an 82 minute feature film. Busted City is an intense drama surrounding the election of Harold Washington as Chicago's first black mayor. The film screened in London, France and Italy as well as the US and was awarded numerous laurels. Dealing with racial politics, Busted City was first staged at Prop Thtr in 2008 & described in the Chicago Reader: “God is in the details of Paul Carr’s new play, a muscular slice-of-life dramedy set in a working-class Chicago bar in 1983 right before Harold Washington won the Democratic mayoral primary. My guess: You’ll gasp at the historically accurate bigotry of its three white male characters - a cop, a retired cop and the bar owner / bookie - and their astounding stream of racist, sexist and homophobic slurs.” The play was recommended.Mr. Carr served as executive producer, co-director, screenwriter and set designer for the feature film of “Busted City.” He wrote, directed and produced "American Barbarian," which won Best Actress in Short Film (Zoe Pike) in both Amsterdam and Nice Int'l Film Festivals, as well as Best Cinematography in a Short Film (Collin Rogers) in Amsterdam. Mr. Carr won Best Director in the Milan Int'l Film Fest and actress Karen O. Fort won Best Supporting Actress there as well. The film screened at The Chicago Horror Festival in September, 2018 and was also accepted into the Chicago Blow-Up Arthouse Festival. Mr. Carr's film, "Empire," is about to enter the film festival circuit and a feature length comedy filmed in 2019 is in post production.Mr Carr's “Debris of the Prophet” was performed at Prop Thtr in 2010. The Chicago Tribune described the production as “intelligent if entirely batty ... Carr is an insightful and sardonic writer ... Carr has some very specific, smartly thought-out frustrations with the way we behave and think these days ...”Mr. Carr either wrote, directed, produced, designed the sets or acted in his plays, Empire, Extraordinary Rendition, & Viral Kitty in the 2013/14/15 Rhinofest hosted by Curious Theater.
