Developed the VisionTally system, a product which uses structured laser light and laser rangefinders to optically scan a bundle of random width and length lumber to automatically calculate the number of boards in the bundle and the width, thickness, and length of each individual board. It is the most accurate, labor-free, and efficient end-tally system available today. Product development included:* A sophisticated data acquisition system incorporating motor control, digital camera acquisition, laser control, and laser rangefinder data acquisition, all synchronized together.* Algorithms to calibrate individual images and data points into a single three-dimensional space. The calibration procedure does not require a controlled environment and is continuously updated to automatically compensate for environmental changes.* Proprietary algorithms to locate boards and objects by assembling many small data points into larger geometric features and then measuring those features with high accuracy.* A very comprehensive client/server database system that allows multiple users to access and interact with the tally results in tremendous detail that is unmatched in the industry.* An interface that allows the system to be monitored, controlled, and upgraded over the Internet.* Hardware and software to monitor the system for failing hardware.* Integration of the system with material handling systems and third-party business software systems.

Served as a key member on a development team for a startup venture that is revolutionizing sports video, broadcasting, and game analysis with automatically indexed, multi-camera, high-definition video. Conceived of, designed, and implemented patent-pending algorithms for compressing, analyzing, and manipulating video that out perform existing technologies.

Taught analog and digital-circuit laboratories within the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. and mentored students with their junior projects.* Trained students in the full circuit design cycle including circuit design and simulation using PSpice, schematic entry and PCB layout using OrCAD, and prototype board assembly and testing.* Taught FPGA programming using Xilinx schematic entry and VHDL tools and microcontroller programming and interfacing using Motorola devices and tools.
