The Doctors Company (TDC) recently decided to make a substantial commitment to expanding the array of liability insurance products it makes available to the health care industry. A separate subsidiary underwriting management company, TDC Specialty Underwriters, Inc. (TDCSU), has been created to facilitate the development of this business. TDCSU is now the Excess and Surplus Lines specialist for TDC, writing business on TDC Specialty Insurance Company paper. It will also have access to admitted paper as needed for certain products. I was hired in mid-January to lead this initiative. Since that time, significant progress has been made standing up the new subsidiary company, securing office space, installing initial systems capabilities, developing policy forms and guidelines and, most importantly, attracting talented and experienced personnel to lead selected business segments and support functions.Our focus from a insurance coverage standpoint is on medical professional liability for health care facilities (Hospitals, Long Term Care and other Medical Facilities), errors and omissions for Managed Care organizations, life sciences products liability/E&O, D&O and employment practices with an initial emphasis on mid-market health care enterprises.As has been the case in my past, we are endeavoring to build a high performing team of technically proficient individuals with a strong desire to build a vibrant and profitable business - and, to do so in a consistently thorough, responsive and reasonable manner. Earning the confidence and support of our broker and insured customers is among our highest priorities as we build TDC Specialty Underwriters. We are enjoying the fast moving and exciting time that comes with creating new things.
