The association was founded in 1996, due to a need by meat and poultry importers and exporters, for a mouthpiece to speak on their behalf and to look after the interests of its members.The Association, whose members represent the large bulk of all South African meat importers and exporters, as well as several overseas exporters, and associations, has been generally accepted and recognised as the industry spokesperson both locally and internationally.The association represents companies that import and export chicken and their role in the market is crucial. The importers provide the essential service of supplying cuts of chicken not produced in enough quantities by the local industry (known as balancing the carcass). This important function allows consumers access to the cuts they require rather than just the cuts available based on the local slaughter volumes. Importers are thus an important part of the chicken supply chain and help to ensure that consumers have continued access to well-priced, high quality protein.

North Star Alliance meets industry, public health and individual needs, more specifically the threat that HIV and Aids poses to long haul truckers on the African continent. We promote the health and well-being of transport and truck stop workers as well as mobile communities. Our mission is to enable the transport industry to respond to the threat of health and safety issues facing mobile populations and corridor communities in resource challenged settings. North Star, made up of private, commercial and humanitarian transporters, is using best practices in supply chain management, innovations in network technology and inside knowledge of the transport industry to establish a network of access points (“Wellness Centres”) providing front-line prevention and treatment services to transporters, sex workers and women at risk, as well as transport community members.
