Chief FacilitatorTowards Zero Suicide Cic Jul 2023 - PresentUnited KingdomI’m the Founder of Towards Zero Suicide CIC and Chief Facilitator for the Zero Suicide Society Transformation Programme.Building on my suicide prevention work over the past 10 years, and the action research project carried out by myself & Steve Phillip in 2023 to engage people working in suicide prevention + people with lived or living experiences of suicide, around practical steps to get the suicide numbers in the UK on a downward trend, towards zero......and following publication of our report 'Moving Towards a Zero Suicide Society' which maps out in detail what a 'Zero Suicide Society' looks like - building on our definition as "a society that is willing & able to do all it can to prevent all preventable suicides" - highlighting those practical actions that will get us there, actions we can take as individuals, families, communities, schools, hospitals, workplaces, industries, professions, etc as well as the actions we need from government, parliament & our institutions......I launched the 'Zero Suicide Society Transformation Programme', initially in collaborative partnership with The Jordan Legacy, with myself as 'Chief Facilitator'.This role is facilitating transformational change to fulfil the vision of a Zero Suicide Society and to get the suicide numbers on a downward trend, towards zero. It’s the role I fulfil in all my paid or volunteer roles, and freelance roles as a change consultant, coach & counsellor. This is my mission folks - my work/career mission and my life mission! On 17 April 2024 (which would have been my mum's birthday), I established Towards Zero Suicide CIC to be 100% dedicated to this mission. Via Towards Zero Suicide CIC (supported by The Jordan Legacy), I was Chief Facilitator & Tour Director for the 'Zero Suicide Society Join The Dots Tour', 11-23 June, from the Humber to the Mersey, which was a pioneering demonstration roll-out of the Zero Suicide Society Transformation Programme. The work continues...every day! -

Collaborative PartnerThe Jordan Legacy Cic Jul 2020 - Jun 2024United KingdomAs a freelancer, I worked in close collaborative partnership with The Jordan Legacy for 4 yrs because we had a shared sense of mission, developed a shared vision, and - for most of those 4 yrs - agreed on an approach we felt would achieve our shared goals. Together, we achieved a great deal and are proud of what we did to 'move the dial' and 'change the narrative'.My primary focus and role in this time became 'Chief Facilitator' for the 'Zero Suicide Society Transformation Programme', a role I now continue via Towards Zero Suicide CIC.Whilst collaborating with The Jordan Legacy, I delivered talks, presentations & workshops; designed & facilitated panel discussion events; facilitated peer support sessions; co-hosted the fortnightly radio show, Jordan's Space; carried out & commented on research; wrote papers; engaged in advocacy & campaigning; connected, networked & 'joined the dots'!I've been deeply involved in suicide prevention since 2013 (& workplace mental health for many years before that), in Australia & UK, always having a global, national, regional & local perspective wherever I am (as suicide impacts everywhere + solutions can be found in many places), inc designing & facilitating global forums for those seeking 'breakthrough solutions for suicide prevention' + 'transformational solutions' or 'zero suicide initiatives'.As a researcher, change consultant, sustainable success coach, workplace wellbeing adviser & counsellor (specialising in loss & grief, mental health & suicide prevention), I've worked with govt, businesses, professional societies, industry associations, big charities, smaller/fledgling not-for-profits, and people with lived/living experiences of suicide.I met Steve Phillip in early 2020 when I was organising the OneTeamGov event for World Suicide Prevention Day 10 Sept 2020 which had a record 933 people registered!I asked Steve to be one of the speakers at that OneTeamGov event, and we then worked closely for the next 4 years. -
Co-Creator/Co-FounderBatonofhopeuk Jan 2022 - Sep 2022United KingdomAs a member of the initial Steering Group (with Ian McClure, Mike McCarthy and Steve Phillip) and a founding member of the Organising Committee, I co-created the concept for the Baton of Hope, then helped to shape the vision, objectives and strategy, and set the wheels in motion for this groundbreaking initiative before 'handing over the baton' to the expanded (and more diverse!) Organising Committee.#BatonOfHopeUK was designed to be the biggest suicide awareness and prevention initiative the UK has ever seen. The primary purpose of the Baton of Hope is to help move us towards a Zero Suicide Society by raising awareness, opening up conversations about suicide and suicide prevention, and encouraging appropriate action. In June/July 2023 a specially designed Baton toured the UK with an intense two-week period of activity, events and media coverage. Customer & Stakeholder Engagement Manager (Then Workplace Wellbeing Adviser)Ausgrid Aug 2016 - Aug 2019Sydney, AustraliaAfter much criticism by the regulator and other key stakeholders, my role was created to help Ausgrid transform from an inwardly-focused state corporation to a customer focused business via appropriate and effective customer and stakeholder research and engagement. The baseline: we surveyed 124 stakeholders:~ 70% of staff said it was "customer-focused" but only 34% of external stakeholders agreed;~ the Net Advocacy Score was -36; among Core Stakeholders -57!~ typically, Ausgrid described as "insular, inflexible, self-serving and arrogant".I applied good practice approaches to facilitate customer-focused change via engagement, eg: ~ strategic reviews of the stakeholder engagement framework and approach;~ developed a new stakeholder engagement infrastructure to facilitate a genuine 'continuous conversation' around the 2019-2024 Regulatory Plan and tariff structures;~ built respectful 'critical friend' relationships with a fantastic group of customer advocates;~ led a state-of-the-art study which provided brutally honest feedback, demonstrating that being open and transparent is what stakeholders value most;~ facilitated greater accountability by more simply explaining how the energy sector works;~ designed and delivered a Customer Research & Insights Plan, including leading the pioneering 'Customers at the Centre' project;~ pulled together a diverse group of 70 stakeholders for a presentation of the research;~ co-designed with stakeholders a pioneering approach to the Regulatory Plan, including a first draft 5 months ahead of the AER's deadline.I then transitioned into another new role as Workplace Wellbeing Adviser:~ external good practice review, internal current practice review, and gap analysis;~ strategic review of support services available and communications for optimum use;~ coaching, consulting and counselling support (I qualified as a professional counsellor)~ continuous feedback loops and rolling improvement initiatives. -
Founder & Chief FacilitatorListen Hear! The Global Campaign For Effective Listening Feb 2011 - Jul 2019GlobalWe launched Listen Hear! in February 2011 and had an initial phase of the Campaign in 2011-2013 which demonstrated how widespread the problem was (and still is) in terms of lack of effective listening & its implications - across many walks of life & business. We outlined potential ways forward in our education system, workplace training & society at large. It became clear that this could be truly transformative.TEDxSydney voted Listen Hear! as "the best idea worth spreading" in 2011.In 2013-2016, there were some specific, targeted listening initiatives around - for example - teaching in schools; workplace mental health; better supporting those with gambling addiction; and breakthrough ideas for halving the numbers of suicides. One of the ideas generated - Digital Life Saving - was a finalist in the Fast Ideas stream at TEDx Sydney 2014.We continue to advocate for effective listening in the mainstream of everyday work & life:https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/just-listen-please-paul-vittles-fmrs-frsa-gaicdPlease let us know what you are currently focusing on around our common agenda of effective listening, and what is next on your agenda. There is a Listen Hear! LinkedIn Group you can join if you share our passion for effective listening:https://www.linkedin.com/groups/3793186

Annual cuts to the overseas aid budget have meant that Australia has not been paying its 'fair share', with aid at record lows, and Australia falling to 19th in the OECD 'league table' of per capita funding. Please push for #FairAusAid!For those who want to know more about the work RESULTS does (and please join us and/or support RESULTS), I've added links to: ~ the website...for information, register your interest, get involved...and (DGR) DONATIONS please!~ a video summarising the global vision to end (extreme) poverty~ a video highlighting what RESULTS does, and the fact it is non-partisan, supported by MPs from all parties. -
DirectorInstinct And Reason May 2012 - Dec 2015Sydney, AustraliaMy role with Instinct and Reason was a mix of change management, business development, people development, and designing & delivering innovative research & consultancy projects. Particular achievements here were engaging with a range of so-called 'hard to engage' groups; creative applications of choice modelling; pioneering approaches to online qualitative research & engagement; and integrating research with strategy consulting. Key projects included working in an area which is a particular passion of mine - defining and delivering a 'mentally healthy' workplace. This included helping to develop and launch Heads Up; and the Work In Progress desired state tracking survey for SuperFriend. Key breakthroughs also included finding new, more insightful, more impactful ways to support those with gambling addiction; resulting in the highly successful 'You're Stronger Than You Think' campaign. During this time, I won the Best Presentation Award at the WA AMSRS Conference 2014 for "Big Picture Thinking, Big Picture Doing" and took to the stage at the Sydney Opera House for TEDxSydney 2014 to showcase one of the "best ideas worth spreading" that year - "Digital Life Saving". -

Advisory Board Of MentorsInspired Youth Mar 2011 - Jun 2014Mentor and non-executive director. Helping the wonderfully creative social enterprise Inspired Youth understand and fulfil its potential. During this period of my association and support, there were many truly inspirational projects and joyous moments. My two personal favourites were the Young Carers Revolution/Tiny Treasures and the musical expression of young people around their experiences in care which resulted in the magnificent video How To Fly. -
Director & Executive CoachTns Dec 2007 - Dec 2009This was a position created for my unique blend of research and coaching expertise. In addition to fulfilling the role and responsibilities of a Research Director, and leading the Transport research practice, I coached senior executives and teams. In all, I coached more than 40 TNS executives, including several Directors and some members of the national leadership team.Whilst at TNS, I co-chaired the 2009 Australian Market and Social Research Society (AMSRS) Conference, with Duncan Rintoul. Under our leadership, it was the biggest ever attendance for an AMSRS Conference, despite being in the immediate post-GFC budget-cutting era - design a compelling event, promote it well, engage with your audience...and they will come! Also during this time, I won the award for Best Presentation at the 2008 WA AMSRS Conference for my presentation/paper "The Best Way To Predict The Future Is To Create It". -
Director Of Social ResearchUrbis Aug 2006 - Nov 2007Urbis was a great place to apply my skills and experience in all forms of development - people development, leadership development, community development, city/town development, land use development, business development...and listening was at the heart of all these disciplines. We carried out some groundbreaking projects, including the impact of the emerging digital age on children & families for the Australian Communications & Media Authority (ACMA) and a study among 12-17 year olds on the impact of debt & financial disadvantage. -
Director Of Public EnterpriseNielsen Feb 2005 - Jul 2006Nielsen brought me out from the UK to Australia, and I will be eternally grateful for that. I initially thought I would be in Australia for 3-4 years, then go back to the UK, but I got to like the place!Nielsen asked me to help them create a national social & government research team, called the Public Enterprise team. It was fun knitting together a team from a group of extremely talented individuals in Brisbane, Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne. We had a fantastic team visioning & business planning session to map out the way forward, and I established the Public Enterprise team with clear strategies in place for the future, before moving on to a new challenge with Urbis.Whilst at Nielsen, I presented at my first Australian Market and Social Research Society (AMSRS) Conference - and won the Best Paper Award for "Research as a Life Changing Experience". -
CeoRba (Uk) May 1991 - Jan 2005Leeds, United KingdomI joined RBA as an Associate Director in 1991, became a Director in 1993, and Managing Director in 1996, leading the business forward with a terrific team of skilled, enthusiastic, diverse, and characterful individuals who became part of 'the RBA community at work'. In that time, the company grew from just 5 people to 50 including all our regular helpers working in mutually-beneficial, flexible arrangements in an innovative environment that broke new ground. RBA was the first research consultancy in the UK to have an ISO-accredited Quality Assurance system and be awarded Investor in People (IIP) status. When the IIP assessors said "we've never seen a business like this before with so much investment in training, mentoring and coaching - why do you do it?", we said "because we believe in it with a passion...and it seems to work"!We won awards, carried out fantastic research and consultancy assignments, had long-standing clients, and had long-serving staff. We did things differently in the way we serviced clients' needs, and we did things differently in developing staff. I was sad to leave when I moved to Australia in 2005 but felt it was the right thing to do at the time. I now look back fondly on those times at RBA and know I learned so much. I know that my colleagues do too.

Research & Engagement ManagerYork City Council Dec 1988 - May 1991My brief was to get the council's planning processes citizen-centric and all the services customer-focused. Initially, I had a role as Customer Services Manager in Housing leading a transformational change programme. Then I was appointed as the Council's first ever Research & Engagement Manager for York as a whole. I put in place a research, consultation and engagement framework that became a model for local authorities in the UK and overseas, and helped shape the policies of national government. During this period, initiatives like the Citizens Charter were introduced - radical stuff 25 years ago!I also facilitated change around the development and implementation of user-centred design & delivery for community care policies. This work is still influencing policy 25 years on, eg in the design of the NDIS in Australia. -
Associate DirectorMori 1984 - 1988After completing my academic training as an economist, I began my professional training as a researcher with MORI. I owe a lot to MORI for giving me such a great launching pad for my career, with excellent training and opportunities to develop. In the period I was with MORI, the number of staff grew from 28 to 110, and turnover grew by an average of 46% pa. I got used to working in a fast-moving, and ever-changing environment. I worked as an opinion pollster on the 1987 General Election, carrying out a poll every day for the 30 days prior to the Election! I went to Liverpool the day Derek Hatton organised a general strike and carried out a survey for The Times. In fact, the first article I ever had published was in The Times (start at the top!).I researched hundreds of topics, and ran two terrific trackers - the career choices of final-year undergraduates, and 'Captains of Industry' (leaders of the top 500 businesses in the UK) - both growing massively under my enthusiastic leadership.I was a founding member of the MORI Human Resources Research Unit, under the leadership of Susan Walker and Roger Stubbs.I had the privilege of having one of the great mentors, (now Sir) Bob Worcester, and many other mentors at that time of my career (too many to mention them all but thank you Mark Robson for being my first, Roger Stubbs for being the calmest, Brian Gosschalk for being the most politically astute, Peter Hutton for being the most intense, and Tim Burns for being the wackiest!).
