About Amber Payne
I'm an award-winning journalist, executive producer, editor and storyteller with a track record for creating bold content that drives conversation. After spending the pandemic year on the Nieman journalism fellowship at Harvard, I emerged even more passionate about being in a position where I could reframe the conversation on racial justice and equity by fusing journalism with context and solutions. I joined The Emancipator as co-editor in chief and spent almost two years developing and launching a newsroom that is focused on explaining structural racism and pointing to solutions. Now as publisher and GM, I'm determined to set us on a path of longevity. I spent the first 15 years of my career working at major networks and media companies and learning a ton.As Executive Producer at Teen Vogue and Them., I oversaw editorial video programming for Conde Nast’s next-generation digital magazines. I cultivated the video strategy for both brands -- creating scalable digital content, while maintaining brand integrity. Teen Vogue’s coverage extends across diverse interest points from fashion and celebrity to gender equality and social justice, while Them. chronicles and celebrates the stories, people and voices of today’s LGBTQ+ community. Before joining CNE, I was the founding Managing Editor of NBCBLK, a section ofNBCNews.com dedicated to telling stories for and about the Black community. The vertical launched in January of 2015 and quickly became an award-winning publication with a mission to elevate the conversation around Black identity, social issues, and culture. I was also an Emmy award-winning producer at NBC Nightly News, the network’s flagship evening broadcast, where I produced breaking news and feature stories.Specialties: Inclusive storytelling, editing, product innovation, digital video and television production, and emerging platforms.

CurrentTilt Shift Media creates documentary films and digital content from a unique point of view. In photography a tilt shift of the lens changes the plane of focus to hone in on an image in the frame. In astronomy, a tilt shift refers to the earth’s changing polar axis. We believe that storytelling can change perspectives, convey revolutionary ideas and spark action.Co-founded with Rayner Ramirez in 2016, we have produced content for major news/entertainment networks, non-profits and corporate clients. In 2020 we finished our first documentary feature, "Harlem Rising: A Community Changing the Odds," about the history and legacy of the Harlem Children's Zone.
Co-Editor-In-Chief, The Emancipator
I co-led the launch of The Emancipator, a multimedia digital publication created to reimagine the first abolitionist newspaper in the United States. This is a collaboration in partnership with Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University. Just as 19th-century anti-slavery newspapers reframed and hastened the quest for abolition, the new Emancipator will amplify critical voices, ideas, debates, and evidence-based opinion in an effort to reframe the national conversation on race and hasten racial justice. In partnership with my co-editor in chief, I shaped this new publication from the ground up, developing an editorial strategy, talent recruitment, event strategy, fundraising, news partnerships and our website build. In less than 1 year we: -Published 141 pieces; garnering 500K total visits and 355k+ engaged minutes-Produced 20+ video commentaries from diverse voices-Cultivated a newsletter following of 40K subscribers with a 40% open rate-Held 18 events (online & in-person) with more than 1000 attendees-Developed editorial partnerships with journalism graduate students
